Talk:Camp Androscoggin

The Androscoggin page shows Ed Healy, the founder of the camp dying in the 1910's. He was alive and well when I was a counsellor there in 1955. This must be a typo. Also, I hope that there is someone with a good enough memory to talkabout the camp when it was on the island, and when surplus World War II landing craft were used for transportation to the mainland. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 75.67.85.178 (talk) 22:26, 19 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

You are referring to "Chief," Ed Healy, Jr. FLAHAM (talk) 14:13, 20 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I'd like to contest the speedy deletion of this page on the count that Camp androscoggin has a multi-thousand person alumni basis, is the main feature and highest source of commercial activity in Wayne, Maine, and is an important landmark in Maine on account of its longevity and prestige. Furthermore, this is not simply a local issue, as several countries and many states are represented as both campers and counselors.

I've no doubt that the camp has had many thousands of alumni - but the same can be said of many other camps in the US. What you need to do is provide independant sources that indicate why this particular camp is notable from all the others in the world - what makes it stand out. "Prestige" is a subjective term which means nothing, other than to people directly concerned - to someone who's never heard of the place before, what prestige does it have ? Simply being famous locally does not satisfy Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion. Where counselors and campers come from is irrelevant as most camps cover many areas and states, and some even have councelors from other countries, so this is not a claim to notability. You need to be able to provide referenced facts as to why this particular camp is notable - try reading Wikipedia:Your first article and WP:N. CultureDrone (talk) 19:28, 4 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I should also point out that an article which says nothing much more than where the camp is, what's offered, and ends with the phrase "Please visit Camp Androscoggin's Web Page for more information." is likely to be regarded as nothing more than an advertisement for the camp, which is another possible reason for deletion. One item on this page should be changed. The two camps consolidated on the site of the junior camp a good number of years before the fire burned down the (original) senior camp on the island. FLAHAM (talk) 04:55, 6 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Have added sources. comment added by Googles05 (talkcontribs) 00:51, 21 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I've added some sources...can the note on the top be taken down? 130.58.193.122 (talk) 00:49, 5 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Camp Androscoggin is notable, in particular, because it is among the oldest summer camps in Maine, as well as the U.S. It was founded in 1907, and has in many ways pioneered the American camping experience. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 98.221.162.229 (talk) 03:56, 9 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

To Whom it May Concern,

I have read over and fixed several of the contested points with this article, as summarized below: -"Its references would be clearer with a different or consistent style of citation, footnoting or external linking."

-Redid reference section using consistent style of footnoting to external links.

-"Its neutrality is disputed"

-Removed sentence claiming "best facilities in Maine," removed opinion words such as "boasts," "best," etc.

-"It may contain original research or unverifiable claims."

-Claims are footnoted under new reference system

-"It may need copy editing for grammar, style, cohesion, tone or spelling."

 -Some copy-editing performed.

If possible, please review this article and update any tags, or reply to the talk page with further suggestions. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Googles05 (talkcontribs) 19:29, 26 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Edit 2 April 2001[edit]

I have attempted to address the templates - see edit summaries. The article is still not perfect and needs developing, and if other editors still believe the previous problems still exist, please add temps back. There is a contradiction in the founding dates - I can't find which is true - perhaps others will have better luck. Acabashi (talk) 14:47, 2 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I got the 1906 date from a 1916 guide to private schools and camps that has been digitized by Google: http://books.google.com/books?id=1kkrAAAAYAAJ&pg=PA234&lpg=PA234&dq=edward+m+healy+androscoggin&source=bl&ots=HrsThDM9IN&sig=4AdcUS64Cv-hStqJOkg4w5AAe-E&hl=en&ei=SACYTePiEOSQ0QG5qf3zCw&sa=X&oi=book_result&ct=result&resnum=7&ved=0CD8Q6AEwBg#v=onepage&q=edward%20m%20healy%20androscoggin&f=false FLAHAM (talk) 05:12, 3 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Many thanks for that; I have changed the text and removed the tags. Acabashi (talk) 12:56, 3 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]
