This article was started in 2004, and then a separate article started at Carburization. In December 2004, the two were merged, and the article was kept at Carburization. Today, in 2009, we've renamed the article Carburizing, and moved the history of the old article to Carburization. Introduction[edit]
The first two sentences are: Carburizing is a heat treatment process in which iron or steel is heated in the presence of another material (but below the metal's melting point) which liberates carbon as it decomposes. The outer surface or case will have higher carbon content than the original material.
I'm confused as to what "(but below the metal's melting point)" refers to--the iron/steel or the other material? Also, which outer surface/case will have a higher carbon content? Here is my proposed revision: Carburizing is a heat treatment process in which iron or steel is heated in the presence of another material below the iron or steel's melting point. Carbon from the other material is liberated and attaches to the surface of the iron or steel. This outer surface (called a case) then has a higher carbon content then the internal material. Correct Spelling?[edit]
Throughout wikipedia this is referred to carburising. Is this really the same thing? or is it like how some countries spell color and others spell colour. 204.10.222.30 (talk) 13:32, 12 April 2011 (UTC)
