Illustration of Chasseurs d'Afrique[edit]

The picture of Chasseurs d'Afrique charging during the Crimean War is a striking one but unfortunately it actually portrays Austro-Hungarian hussars, either on peace-time manouvers or during the very early stages of World War I (August 1914). The mistake is a reasonable one - the uniforms were of similar colours - but perhaps should be corrected. There are a large number of paintings and photographs of the Chasseurs d'Afrique available in electronic form but unfortunately I have never been able to master the art of downloading illustrations onto Wikipedia. 'Huntsmen of Africa'[edit]

This literal translation is unhelpful. While it is true that French word chasseur originally means 'hunter,' in this context it means 'light cavalry'- being a contraction of the term ' chasseurs a cheval. '

' Chasseur ' was co-opted as a military term in the C18th in the same way that ' jäger ' in German and the English 'ranger' were. All were terms for professional huntsmen used to refer to marksmen, skirmishers, and light troops in general.

The translation is, in any case, redundant as the opening sentence with links is self-explanatory. It is better removed JF42 (talk) 13:09, 9 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]
