A CFO has many functions as one of the top officers of a company. For public and private companies, a CFO's role should include the development and maintenance of: - cash flow model and budget; - high quality financial systems; - an effective set of internal controls and the measurement and evaluation of such controls; - key financial and non-financial metrics for the company and its departments/segments; - compensation policies, personnel reviews, equity plans; - risk management policies including contract review and executions.

Additionally, CFO's are an integral part of defining the strategic direction of the company and often serve as a member of the Board of Directors.

A primary role of the CFO is also to develop and maintain relationships with key third party advisors including attorneys; bankers; auditors; tax advisors; investors; key vendors; insurance brokers; cash management advisors; human resource people - if there are quality ones available :); hardware and software vendors and for smaller companies, payroll service personnel.

Qualified CFO's generally have a CPA license, possibly an MBA and likely have employment experience with the Big 4 accounting firms. Small businesses without a CFO will often find instant improvement in measurement and quality of financial and non-financial information when hiring a CFO or other financial executive.
