Foch/Petain[edit]

The two Petain biographies which I've just consulted (Atkin 1997, Williams 2005) are pretty clear that he continued to be Commander-in-Chief of the French Army after Foch's appointment as Supreme Allied Commander, although there is slight ambiguity over whether it lasted until the peace treaty was signed in June 1919 or until his appointment as Vice-Chairman of the Supreme War Council in January 1920.

The date given for Foch's appointment is a little misleading as well - the Doullens Conference of March 1918 initially appointed him to a purely co-ordinating role, and he was not given a command title until another conference in April (Beauvais iirc). Thereafter his de facto power increased - staff were poached from Petain's GQG to work for Foch's chiefs of staff (Weygand and Desticker), said staff acquired control over railway transportation (giving them far more power over British and American forces than tends to be remembered in Anglo-Saxon accounts) and Petain was told to report to Foch rather than to the French Government. He was still Commander-in-Chief of French forces on the Western Front though.Paulturtle (talk) 18:43, 4 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Sources/General comment[edit]

Hello,

On 12 September 2020, legifrance.gouv.fr, the government website hosting the laws and decrees of France was updated. Unfortunately, by doing so, the PDF versions of the decrees nominating at the offices were deleted. As a consequence, all sources between the 50's and the 90's are now dead links. I'm searching for an alternative.
