Parmi les voyageurs à Pékin, on rencontre Chrétien-Louis de Guignes (1759-1845), le fils de l’académicien et orientaliste Joseph de Guignes. Celui-là même qui publia un Mémoire dans lequel on prouve que les chinois sont une colonie égyptienne (P. Dessaint & Saillant, 1759, in-8°). Guignes, le fils, séjourna une dizaine d’années comme « résident de France à la Chine ». Il accompagna, en 1794-95, à Pékin, l’ambassade hollandaise de Tizing. Guignes s’attacha surtout à corriger les erreurs que l’on trouve dans les ouvrages relatifs à la Chine et à révéler, « les grands défauts » que renferme ce pays. Son livre Voyages à Pékin, Manille et l’île de France, faits dans l’intervalle des années 1784 à 1801, a été publié par l’Imprimerie impériale, en 1803, et comprend 98 planches et cartes.<:ref>Canal Academie, émission d'internet: Les voyageurs à Pékin</ref>
