Untitled[edit]

This article oozes like a chamber of commerce brochure. It contains so many unverfied claims, uncited information spouted as fact and speculation on future events that I lost track of what year I was in while reading it. It needs major rewriting to brought up to Wikipedia standards. Also, I'm from Chula Vista... the sprawling 'McMansions' at Eastlake country club are not indicative of a "typical suburban nieghborhood in Chula Vista" I am changing the caption of that photo 67.124.202.98 15:31, 14 October 2007 (UTC)

No kidding! Chula Vista's neighborhoods are too diverse in order to have a "typical neighborhood." —Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.10.230.146 (talk) 17:47, 1 December 2009 (UTC)

  • The flag is the city seal in maroon on a white background. There is a maroon stripe along the bottom of said flag. The nickname is "Chula Juana" because of its proximity to the border, but is generally used in a derogatory fashion. -DavDaven 04:37, 3 November 2005 (UTC)

  • I think it's ready. — Seven Days » talk 00:40, 10 January 2006 (UTC)
Has anyone heard of a baseball team, the Tijuana Toros of the Golden League coming to Chula Vista next year? The Toros didn't get the right ballpark in that side of the border. Chula Vista has a facility for a Western League team in 2001. Keep me up to date and add that announcement to the article. + 207.200.116.6 04:43, 2 November 2006 (UTC)
One could download the flag and the seal from the Chula Vista Gov't Webpage. But I have to wonder if the copyright law is different regarding Federal and State/local sourced images. --207.114.206.48 (talk) 12:55, 4 January 2009 (UTC)
There is a significant difference that came up in previous edits. Federal images are free to use, however, those images from State and Local government sources remain the property of that legal entities, and one needs permission to use them, as with any copyright'd image. --RightCowLeftCoast (talk) 03:07, 29 June 2010 (UTC)

Eastlake Emancipation[edit]

Have you ever been somewhere in San Diego County and overheard or where maybe involved in a conversation when someone may ask "what city do you live in?" or "where are you from?" and people respond "Eastlake, CA" or "Eastlake" Well as we all know, Eastlake is not a city. People just want to differentiate and eloquently put it as saying they are not in Chula Vista, but indeed they are.

I live in Rancho Del Rey, my mom is in Otay Ranch, but I still represent and say Chula Vista when someone asks me where I am from. What is it with people trying to fake it like they are not part of the city? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 216.65.211.116 (talkcontribs) 12:28, 30 November 2006

No mention of Chulajuana?[edit]

Wow, is this entry sugar coated! There's no mention of its derisive nickname, "Chulajuana." --24.249.108.133 22:04, 29 December 2006 (UTC)

The nickname, is derogatory and a POV statement, however, if you so still wish, you can add it to a new section in the article. --207.114.206.48 (talk) 02:07, 25 December 2008 (UTC)

-- The nickname's also been there for decades...POV or not. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 98.112.239.142 (talk) 08:03, 5 December 2009 (UTC)

It has. However, if it is to be added it would need a verifiable reliable source reference to support the newly added content. --RightCowLeftCoast (talk) 08:48, 5 December 2009 (UTC)

Before including it in the article, I would like to reach a consensus; I have found a reliable source reference as to Chula Vista being referred to (a nickname) as "Chula-Juana". Here is the reference. Seeing as how it is used locally, but some consider it derogatory, I don't want to just add it.--RightCowLeftCoast (talk) 22:39, 16 January 2011 (UTC)

Not hearing any objections, I shall place it, with the reference in the nickname section. --RightCowLeftCoast (talk) 16:23, 23 January 2011 (UTC)

  • The nickname "Chulajuana" probably should not be in the info box-since it is considered highly offensive by many residents of the city. However, I see no reason why it shouldn't be mentioned in the body of the text, along with the reason why the city is nick named Chulajuana. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 98.176.116.148 (talk) 07:58, 30 July 2011 (UTC)
See WP:NOTCENSORED & WP:VER. Although certain readers may find it offensive, the nickname is referenced to a highly reliable source, including the Los Angeles Times, and wikipedia is not censored. --RightCowLeftCoast (talk) 09:48, 30 July 2011 (UTC)

Population totals?[edit]

"According to the 2000 census, the city's population was 173,556."

"As of 2005 there were 173,556 people, 57,705 households, and 43,567 families residing in the city"

It is very hard to accept that both of this statements could be true; identical populations 5 years apart. Dbiel (Talk) 01:32, 30 May 2007 (UTC)

I tried to update the info. --Eric Bekins 01:36, 31 May 2007 (UTC)
There is a PDF on the City of Chula Vista website, in the "about" section with verified information you can use to update the information. --207.114.206.48 (talk) 12:53, 4 January 2009 (UTC)

Assessment[edit]

Reset class to match edit note of Cashman. This page falls short of "B" for following reasons:

  • Not useful to all readers. Anyone seeking data on natural features, infrastructure, transportation and many other topics will be left in the cold.
  • Referencing is incredibly light for a city article. A "B" class article would typically have three to six times as many referencesFeralfeline 04:44, 16 September 2007 (UTC)

Spanish translation[edit]

In the "History" section, the article gives the translation as "beautiful view" while I am quite sure that it actually means "cute view" or something similar. I am not sure, so if anyone can verify this and fix the article, it would be helpful. Shannon1talk contribs 03:20, 30 May 2009 (UTC)

Chula Vista does translate to "Beautiful View," and not "cute view." No verification needed, since that is common knowledge. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.10.230.146 (talk) 17:52, 1 December 2009 (UTC)

I believe that the translation has been disputed in the past, and thus the request for a verified reliable source reference. --RightCowLeftCoast (talk) 19:38, 1 December 2009 (UTC)

Look it up in a Spanish dictionary. That is as common knowledge as you can get! In MOST cases, it does translate to "Beautiful View." I'm sure that the town (before it was a city), was named that after "Beautiful View," "Pretty View," or "Brilliant View," and not the other slang terms associated with "chula," like "girlfriend," "pimp," or "rascal."24.177.37.156 (talk) 18:27, 30 December 2009 (UTC)

Crime[edit]

I think a small section on crime would be appropriate, since Chula Vista does have a significant amount of crime in the west side neighborhoods of Otay, Harborside, and other areas west of Broadway. Even more significant though, is that the crime in Otay and Harborside have fallen since the 1970's and 1980's (with spikes in the early 1990's and early 2000's). Although it's not Compton, Chula Vista's crime average is slightly higher than the national average. One of the oldest gangs in San Diego County hails from Chula Vista (Varrio Otay, circa 1920's/1930's).24.177.37.156 (talk) 18:37, 30 December 2009 (UTC)

Notable Natives edits[edit]

Moved Karlos "Solrak" Paez and 2009 LLWS Chapions to the "CV notable natives and residents article page." It looks cleaner, and that's what the linked page is for. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.10.224.148 (talk) 20:49, 5 January 2010 (UTC)

Userbox[edit]

Here is a userbox I have created for wikipedians who live or come from Chula Vista:

CV This user lives in or hails from
Chula Vista

If we can get a legal use image of the city seal, we can replace the CV with that.--RightCowLeftCoast (talk) 17:38, 18 August 2009 (UTC)

Flag and Seal[edit]

The seal that on the page is wrong beacuse it has no color but it's only seal I could find if anyone has one with color that would help. Also we need the flag and I can't find any if someone has a picture of the flag of Chula Vista that would be very helpful. Spongie555 (talk) 20:15, 12 August 2010 (UTC)

here is a link that shows the flag and the seal(since the seal is on the flag). http://www.waymarking.com/waymarks/WM59QZ_City_of_Chula_Vista_California_USA
The flag and seal are up and running. Spongie555 (talk) 04:04, 8 September 2010 (UTC)

FA[edit]

I know it has along way for FA but maybe we should get this article for FA by Ocotober 17, 2011, which is the cities centennial. That is alot of time so i think the article can improve by then. Spongie555 (talk) 04:04, 8 September 2010 (UTC)

I'd suggest forking the bulk of the history section to History of Chula Vista, California & leaving a summary in its place, per WP:SS. Ameriquedialectics 21:49, 14 October 2010 (UTC)
Spongie informs me on my talk page that: "One problem of the Chula Vista article is that the history was taken from the Cities website where they give a brief history." Spongie555 (talk) 03:09, 15 October 2010 (UTC)
So I've taken a look and that's the case: [1], so that section will have to be entirely removed & re-written, noting the city website as a reference. Ameriquedialectics 20:24, 15 October 2010 (UTC)
The cities brief history page is one of the few imformation about Chula Vista on the internent. [2] is another website that could help reference some things and expand. Spongie555 (talk) 03:32, 19 October 2010 (UTC)

There is a local historian that has written a small book about the history of Chula Vista, as well as there may be information to be found at the San Diego Historical Society. --RightCowLeftCoast (talk) 17:23, 12 January 2011 (UTC)

Yes i know very well of the book on Chula Vista's history but it isnt relased till March or May Spongie555 (talk) 19:10, 12 January 2011 (UTC)

A FA looks very unrealistic now as the article is very bad shape. We could go for a GA but i think a DYK drive of Chula Vista related articles for the centennial would be better. Spongie555 (talk) 05:18, 17 January 2011 (UTC)

Thanks for the images i was looking for some that where in public domain but couldnt find much. Spongie555 (talk) 04:10, 2 November 2010 (UTC)

Help[edit]

I created Operation Lemon Capital Centennial to help work to expand Chula Vista related articles. If you like to help you can. Spongie555 (talk) 04:00, 19 January 2011 (UTC)

Camp Weber/Otay[edit]

Previously there was a question on this talk page about a former Army Camp in Chula Vista. I managed to find this link at the California Military Museum Website. A small edition, but a welcome addition to the history section none the less. --RightCowLeftCoast (talk) 05:18, 19 January 2011 (UTC)

Sources[edit]

There was a website i found that had sources all about Chula Vista we could use , [3]. Spongie555 (talk) 04:21, 21 January 2011 (UTC)

Sustainability[edit]

Should the new content be included as a general article about the city? It feels a bit to me like it might fall under WP:ADVERTISING for the awarding organization. Locally I haven't heard about this award until it was added onto here. --RightCowLeftCoast (talk) 08:32, 3 February 2011 (UTC)

It does look like advertisement but maybe we could make an awards section maybe. Spongie555 (talk) 23:19, 3 February 2011 (UTC)
That sounds like a good compromise. However, I have to wonder, are there other awards that Chula Vista, as a city and not just the government of, have been awarded to warrant an awards section? Is there precedents with other articles for cities for an awards section (for I have not seen one with other similar articles)? --RightCowLeftCoast (talk) 22:23, 4 February 2011 (UTC)
Looking at other city article they don't really have award sections. Also I don't know of any other awards te city has received unless you count the little league world series title which is a team sport award for representing chula vista. Spongie555 (talk) 08:30, 13 February 2011 (UTC)

I will tag this section for removal discussion, and if I don't hear objection by 27FEB11, I will consider there to be a consensus supporting removal of this section based on what is already discussed above. --RightCowLeftCoast (talk) 08:09, 13 February 2011 (UTC)

Without hearing objection up to this point, I am removing the section in question. --RightCowLeftCoast (talk) 03:05, 10 March 2011 (UTC)

"center of one of the richest economic and culturally diverse zones in the United States" & "exerts strong influence on the nearby surrounding communities"[edit]

These two statements in the introduction of this article may violate WP:NPOV, and they are not supported by a reference from a reliable source; I have tagged them accordingly. Please provide references to support these statements. --RightCowLeftCoast (talk) 10:03, 19 March 2011 (UTC)

Reliability of source[edit]

You are invited to join the discussion at WP:RSN#sandiegostreetcars.org. } RightCowLeftCoast (talk) 01:38, 28 April 2011 (UTC) (Using {{pls}})

I don't know how reliable the source is but Chula Vista did have street cars according to city website we did have street cars. They where destroyed in a flood according to why I read Spongie555 (talk) 02:50, 28 April 2011 (UTC)
Depending on the outcome of the discussion on RSN the content should be supported by another reference; or conversely support with additional reliable sources, of course it can be bombarded. --RightCowLeftCoast (talk) 04:01, 28 April 2011 (UTC)

Sunny Vista?[edit]

While trying to find a RS to support the naming of interstate 5 south of downtown as "Montgomery freeway" I stumbled upon a map hosted by the CSUSM server. There it depicts an area which appears to be where the current interstate 805 is on named "Sunny Vista". Anyone else know anything about it? Should mention of this community be included in the history section?--RightCowLeftCoast (talk) 14:46, 14 August 2012 (UTC)

I have never heard of Sunny Vista though it is possible it was a historical community that faded way over time. Maybe we should find more sources before adding it. Spongie555 (talk) 19:56, 14 August 2012 (UTC)
Well it appears to be a name of a community within Chula Vista, being mentioned in this book, and mentioned in other books (albeit briefly (not enough to be independently notable in and of itself)).--RightCowLeftCoast (talk) 06:40, 15 August 2012 (UTC)
Possible it could a community like Eastlake but smaller. Spongie555 (talk) 04:33, 16 August 2012 (UTC)

Structure[edit]

Hi. I'm going through all the US Cities (as per List of United States cities by population) in an effort to provide some uniformity in structure. Anyone have an issue with me restructuring this article as per Wikipedia:WikiProject Cities/US Guideline. I won't be changing any content, merely the order. Occasionally, I will also move a picture just to clean up spacing issues. I've already gone through the top 20 or so on the above list, if you'd like to see how they turned out. Thoughts?
