Convert from redirect to disambiguation[edit]

I have converted this page from a redirect to maize into a disambiguation page, and redirected corn (disambiguation) here, and I'll explain the reason I did that. Ancient history articles are often written based on public domain translations of the ancient texts that date from the late 19th and early 20th century, in which "corn" is used in its generic sense, which British editors and readers still use and understand, so the word "corn" often appears in those articles meaning wheat or some other crop. A confused American reader or editor, finding the word "corn" in that context and not understanding its generic meaning, may look up "corn" on Wikipedia and find it redirects to "maize", which does not help him understand its use in these texts and articles. This happened today on the talk page for the Battle of Alesia. So I think it would be more helpful for a search for "corn" to bring up a disambiguation page that explains the historic/British generic meaning as well as the modern American specific one. --Nicknack009 (talk) 15:54, 21 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]

You have not addressed my reasons, and the discussion at Talk:Corn (disambiguation) contains nothing more recent than 2013. Based on that discussion, it seems this has been a fight between two usages, one of which has won. As I explained above, it is not informative. I would definitely agree with a move to disambig. - I just came across an American article where the writer seemed to think that Scotch whisky was made from maize! "Corn" does not mean Zea mays in most English-speaking countries. Sheila1988 (talk) 20:44, 7 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

I too would find a redirect to the disambiguation page much less disorienting. I can't speak for everyone where I am (England), but to me an unqualified ‘corn’ always refers to wheat, or to grain generally. Putting that into Wikipedia and seeing a disambiguation page would be, while slightly jarring, a very useful reminder that the word means different things to different people. But seeing a page about another type of grain entirely, as I just did, is simply confusing.
By all means note that the word refers to maize for many people. (Perhaps, in a generation or two, it will for all.) But a redirect should be to a page that's intimately related, and for a significant minority of native English speakers, right now it's not.
