FAQ[edit]

Sorry about that lack of sources for all this, most is retold from discussions with Ted and Heath on the old messageboard and that interview I linked to repeats most of these things. Also, a lot comes from the FAQ they had up on the messageboard. I made a copy before the board went down so here's the entire thing (the note on the current lineup must've been edited in much later);

Question: Is Craig's Brother really back together?

Answer: Yes.

Question: Is Craig’s Brother a Christian band?

Answer: Craig’s Brother did not want to use God/Jesus as a means to sell records. They also did not want to limit themselves to a Christian audience. Some CB enthusiasts argue that they are a Christian band due to biblical and spiritual references in their lyrics. You can decide for yourself if they are a Christian band, they’re sick of arguing about it.

Question: Why did Craig’s Brother break up in the first place?

Answer: After Andy Snyder and Adam Nigh quit in 1998, Ted Bond and Heath Konkel began an exhaustive search for replacement guitar players. Several talented (and not so talented) guitarists came and went for various reasons, and after pickin’s went from slim to nill, Heath announced his resignation, opting to concentrate his efforts toward a college education. With upcoming shows and unwillingness to give up, Ted scrambled to find a replacement drummer. 2 replacements were found, but after another year and a half of going through more band members (some more dedicated than others) he decided to give up on Craig’s Brother. Note* Being released from an unsupportive record label could have contributed to the break up, however it is speculated by some that being on that label is what initially caused the problems.

Question: Why did CB get released from Tooth and Nail Records? (aka: Hecka Fresh and Nail)

Answer: From the beginning T&N was less than cooperative with the great minds behind CB. It is believed by some, though not proven, that CB was signed merely for a tax write off. T&N did little to promote and support what we all know as one of the most inspired and intelligent punk rock bands ever. Why is this? One can only guess. Ted began to make decisions on his own, recording a boys choir for Lost at Sea against the will of Brandon Ebil and Bill Powers. Ted also outwardly supported and promoted Napster (before the Napster lawsuits), since he believes intellectual property (ie: a book or a song) should be free for anyone to enjoy. T&N does not. In a separate incident, a picture of former drummer Juice Cabrera “flipping the bird” appeared on the Craig’s Brother website, causing a major Christian distributor to drop the band. That was the last straw as far as T&N was concerned. What’s notable about this, though, is that even after CB was dropped record sales stayed steady and the distributor picked them back up.

Question: Why the name Craig’s Brother?

Answer: Scott, CB bassist, attended San Lorenzo Valley High with many of the other CB members. Scott’s older brother, Craig, was a really cool football jock who everyone at school wanted to be friends with. When people recognized Scott as Craig’s little brother they would often ask him, “Hey, aren’t you Craig’s brother”? This was very annoying for Scott, but very amusing for his friends and bandmates. CB took the joke a step further, naming their band “Craig’s Brother”, assuring Scott’s immortality. Ironically enough, naming the band Craig’s Brother ended up prompting years of further irritation for not only Scott but for everyone else as well.

Question: How did Craig’s Brother become a band?

Answer: Andy and Ted knew each other from junior high and high school, and though they weren’t close friends, Andy knew of Ted’s abilities and asked him to come play guitar for a band that he had created with Heath and Scott. After some consideration Ted quit his band and joined Andy’s. Ted then became the singer, and Dave Cree joined on guitar. Craig’s Brother was born.

Question: What’s with all the line up changes?

Answer: Who knows why this poor band couldn’t keep it’s hands on good musicians. One can only compare CB to other bands who went through a lot of line up changes, (Bad Religion for example), and conclude that sometimes that’s the way it is. No one knows for sure why Andy and Adam quit. Adam quit because he was sick of being heckled by the band all the time. He didn't agree with decisions that band was making, and he wanted to sing in a band of his own. Andy basically followed Adam, and pretty much as soon as they were out, Too Bad Eugene was born.

After A&A left the band, Nick Handley, who also went to SLVHS, joined as a guitar player for a tour and then quit or was fired for reasons that are a bit unclear. Craig’s Brother advertised their need for guitar players on their web site, and a kid from Jacksonville Florida, by the name of Ryan Key, literally jumped into his car, with his aunt, and drove across the country to audition. Ryan convinced Dan McClintock to come audition as well.

While on tour Ryan convinced Heath to buy a van when the rest of the band wasn’t around. Then on the road, in Canada, Ryan crashed the van. The band had to take a few weeks off of tour to fix it, and take care of other financial problems. Ryan didn’t want to wait around, he wanted to tour and play shows, so he quit. Dan was with CB significantly longer than Ryan, though after Lost at Sea was recorded and another tour put under his belt, he got into a car accident on one of California’s most infamously deadly highways, HW 17 (oh no!). That incident is thought to be what made Dan want to go home.

After Ryan and Dan quit, the band went on hiatus for a few months while Ted and Heath unsuccessfully searched for replacement guitarists. Garrett Baldwin was the next to join. Garrett, Heath’s then roommate, basically got in by telling Heath that he was going to play guitar. So, with out much discussion about it, Garrett was in. Heath quit a few months later. Juice Cabrera was then in-listed.

Next came Steven Neufield, the evil boy genius from Bakersfield, Ca. Steven sent in a demo of his band Hey Mike! Ted was thoroughly impressed, and after showing the CD to the rest of the band, Steven was in. Juice was released about a year later, after he didn’t make it to a radio gig in Monterey, California. This, though not a crime in itself, is what ultimately got Juice ousted from Craig’s Brother. Since he lived in Ventura, Ca. (6-7 hours away from Santa Cruz) it was hard for him to make it to practices and shows. It was more reasonable for him to just not be in the band. He was “fired” in a really uncomplimentary way, though is still on friendly terms with his former CB band mates. Juice, we're still sorry, and we love you.

Even though Juice was out, the shows were still on and Tristan Pardee, an acquaintance of Garrett, was asked to join on drums. Tristan was more than able to play what was required of him and he was with the band until the end.

Steven took some time off from CB to play with Hey Mike! some where around the fall of 2001, so a replacement had to be found. Ted also started to feel dissatisfied with Garrett’s performance, and asked Steven to come back. He did and Garrett was released. Steven lived in the bands’ practice room until they broke up (it was only a few weeks).

The band reuinted in the Spring of 2004 with Ted, Heath and Scott. Steven plays with CB as his schedule with Hey Mike! permits. He recoreded on the CB's come-back release, E.P.idemic. Many guitar auditions have occured since the band re-formed, with guitarists from California, Florida, Canada, Ireland and Australia traveling to try their hand.

The current line up is Ted-guitar and vocals, Glade guitar and vocals, Scott-bass, Heath-drums and vocals.

Question: Did Craig’s Brother ever play at Cornerstone?

Answer: The answer to this question is NO. There are some who believe they did, however, what those individuals are thinking of was not a full band. Only Ryan and Dan showed up for the purpose of selling merch from their backpakc's. They ended up coincidentally playing a couple CB songs. Ted didn’t go, Scott didn’t go and Heath didn’t go. If this to any individual means that CB was at Cornerstone, then I guess they were, and I'm a monkey's uncle.

Question: Will Craig's Brother ever come to my town?

Answer: Probably Not.

Question: What's my favorite CB song about?

Answer: Apparently it's not cool to tell people what your songs are about, so we're not going to break the trend. Make something up that has meaning for you.

Question: Are the former members of Craig’s Brother still friends, or at least on friendly terms with each other?

Yes, everyone loves each other... nightly.
