can u guy tell me that if there is one tooth missing, then, can it be adjusted within the teeth, or shall we have to put a tooth cap on missing tooth. Which one is suitable and practical?

On the cheap .. pulling teeth

There should be a mention of the short cut most dentists take when on the cheap - pulling teeth and pulling back the front teeth and forcing the lower jaw to the rear. It give the person a forever teenage chin and damages the jaw. It creates a tendon complication called ??. You have to look for dentists that will not do this.

Just curious - shouldn't this be labelled under 'orthodontic brace'? Once one moves into having braces, it's under the heading of orthodontia, and no longer dentistry.

I changed the main picture on the page to one that is more informative and a lot less disgusting. It illustrates the application and form of braces much better than the original and isn't quite as disturbing. Waqcku 19:35, 9 August 2006 (UTC)

Ceramic Braces

Is it really necessary to include the picture of a man with ceramic braces? I don't find it helpful. A picture with someone with metal braces might be. thanks so much-it looks a lot better!-Qua Qua

reorganize this topic

Brackets are just a tool in orthodontic therapy. In this article there is a lot of confusion, it seems that braces and orthodontic therapy are the same thing. For example: "Typical cost of braces in the United States is about 5,000 USD".I think the whole topic should be reorganized and many parts discussed in other topics.

This is ambiguous, what is the differnence between dental arch and dental palate?

In the main article it says: "An expander can still be used on an adult without surgery, but to expand the dental arch, and not the palate." The drawings in dental arch and palate show the almost the same thing.

fetishes

There used to be a reference in the braces in popular culture section to braces being a fetish for some people. However, this reference, as well as the separate article on fetishes (as well as it being listed in types of fetishes) has been removed. Why?

Find a different picture

Can we please use a different picture? I'm sure there are plenty of other pictures that properly illustrate braces without being so, erm, confronting. We don't want to be scaring away young, potential braces candidates here. --Candy-Panda 06:36, 8 June 2007 (UTC)

Temperature-sensitive materials

Hi. I'm no expert, but wile reviewing revent edits, I came across this change made on 18 April. Part of the change removed some interesting material regarding temperature-sensitive materials. The following is an excerpt of the removed/reworked content.

Modern orthodontics makes frequent use of nickel-titanium archwires and temperature-sensitive materials. When cold, the archwire is limp and flexible, easily threaded between brackets of any configuration. Once heated to body temperature, the archwire will stiffen and seek to retain its shape, creating constant light force on the teeth.

If this is accurate, could someone with more expertise than I integrate it back into the article? Thanks. -- 02:11, 2 May 2008 (UTC)

Reorganize and reconsider this page

I am an orthodontist and following the development of this page is difficult to understand if it can be of any use for anyone. For sure is not useful for any orthodontist. Should we leave this page to laypeople and start something else? By the way, the term braces is not used in scientific literature, where you can rather read "orthodontic appliance". Orthodontic appliance is such a broad term that includes 50% of orthodontic knowledge...We can't put so many informations in this article. This article refers to the device as "braces" because of the guideline Use common names. In general, the intended audience for an article is dependent on the scope of interest of the topic. In this case, a general audience would be interested in braces, so it's worthwhile to give a "low-tech" overview to begin with. If there is content of a more technical nature, it may be appropriate to provide such content in subsections positioned towards the end of the article, or possibly to create more specific sub-articles covering specific topics in greater detail, as per WP:SPINOUT. Personally, as a curious lay-person, I agree, I would like to see quite a bit more technical content in this, or other orthodontic articles. This article has quite a bit of room to expand and improve. Unfortunately, short of a university medical library, I've found it fairly difficult to find content that can be added to this article where I can provide a verifiable source. If anyone can provide me with facts and associated sources that they feel belong in this article, I'd be happy to help integrate them into Wikipedia. -Verdatum (talk) 16:13, 16 October 2008 (UTC)

Actually, the second image that you referred to used to be the lead photo. I found the current lead photo on Flickr and swapped it in because it looked more conventional than what appears to be a highly specific technique in the latter photo. However, the photo is not "yucky" or "disgusting" at all, unless teeth creep you out. SchuminWeb (Talk) 01:37, 7 August 2010 (UTC)

Procedure

The last line in the procedure article says: To do the gradual work required, braces apply no more than ______ (buccal) ______ (distal) newton meters of force to a tooth by whichever leverage in use.

Newton meters is not a measure of force, but torque!

I bet this is not the the right place the discuss this...I'm a noob :-)

Flossing

One must carefully thread the floss between the wire and the tooth, much like threading a sewing needle, just at a much larger scale. There are other methods too, such as buying specialized floss for braces. They often are just like normal floss, except come in packages and are not very long, but at the end of each strip of floss is a fairly long plastic covering, making it easy to get through between the wire, and thus quickly allowing you to floss.
