External links modified[edit]

Hello fellow Wikipedians,

I have just added archive links to one external link on Deposit (politics). Please take a moment to review my edit. If necessary, add {{cbignore}} after the link to keep me from modifying it. Alternatively, you can add {{nobots|deny=InternetArchiveBot}} to keep me off the page altogether. I made the following changes:

When you have finished reviewing my changes, please set the checked parameter below to true to let others know.

Canada[edit]

I removed the sentence referring to candidates losing deposits based on a vote threshold. It was unreferenced and hasn't been true at a minimum for over a decade (I myself ran in 2008, and there was no such requirement). This inaccurate info was even referenced in national coverage on election night. I will put it back if I can find a reference as to when that ended.

2015 Rules[1]

To receive a refund of the nomination deposit after the election, the candidate or the candidate's official agent has to:

  • return all unused or cancelled tax receipts as well as a copy of each used tax receipt to Elections Canada within one month after election day, and
  • fulfill the reporting requirements set out in the Canada Elections Act and Chapter 4 of this handbook

Where do forfeited deposits go?[edit]

It would be instructive if something could be said as to what happens to forfeited deposits as there are bound to be misunderstandings and misinformation, with some wondering if the Treasury gets a windfall from multiple-cornered elections. My understanding is they primarily go towards the electoral authority's costs of holding the election but confirmation is lacking.
