Merge[edit]

Should this article be merged into Dome car? There's considerable overlap between the two and I don't know the dome lounges, as opposed to dome coaches, dome sleepers etc merits a stand-alone article. Mackensen (talk) 18:25, 28 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I don't really see a difference between dome cars and lounges, so I support a merge. --Aaron-Tripel (talk) 19:12, 28 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I've done some thinking on this question since I was asked to participate in the discussion. I was one of the main contributors to the original dome car article and my main efforts on this article specifically were to add references and images so that the article could be used in the Portal:Trains/Did you know section earlier this month. It struck me that this article was very U.S.-centric even though dome lounge cars have been used in Europe (as the photo from Sweden shows).
A lounge car is not necessarily a dome car, and neither is a dome car necessarily a lounge car. There are dome lounge cars, dome diner cars, dome sleeper cars and dome observation cars, and some cars combine aspects of three or more types so there are dome diner lounge cars and dome sleeper lounge cars. However, it seems to me that the most logical representation here is to consolidate all of the dome car types into the dome car article with subsections for the specialized types. This makes sense to me because a dome lounge car is primarily a dome car first, especially when judged solely by exterior spotting details. So I would support a merge. I'm more surprised that this article was created in 2008 and this discussion didn't come up earlier. Slambo (Speak) 15:17, 30 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I've added the appropriate merge templates and placed a notice on Wikipedia Talk:WikiProject Trains. Slambo (Speak) 15:21, 30 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I'm not sure I was even aware these were separate articles (though I'm certain I've edited both). Slambo's solution makes perfect sense to me. Mackensen (talk) 14:24, 7 October 2013 (UTC)  Done[reply]
