Untitled[edit]

The analysis of song content is definitely incomplete. It is clear that there are gender issues discussed in the lyrics that are not mentioned. The hard rock/gem quote is taken out of context. I haven't made a change because I don't exactly know what to do.

'Song Analysis---'

I thought the song was telling women not to have sex with men who don't a relationship with them and men who are "low lives" and abuse women?

This is an example from the song:

Release date[edit]

July 1998 release date doesn't seem right. As noted, it hit number 1 in its debut week on the Billboard chart but that was Nov 14, 1998. It did nothing at all for 4 months, then jumped straight to #1 ? I don't think so. PatConolly (talk) 21:22, 23 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Looking in Billboard for a better date. The song that was getting airplay when the album was released was "Can't Take My Eyes Off of You".

The "Doo Wop" single was reviewed in the same issue as the album, Aug 29. The review states "this is the first official single from Hill's much-anticipated solo debut". This issue was also the first week that "Doo Wop" reached the R&B Airplay chart. However, this single was not for sale to the public.

Billboard article in Nov 7 issue says 'After three months at radio, Lauryn Hill's "Doo Wop (That Thing)" (Ruffhouse /Columbia) is finally released at retail.'

RIAA Gold and Platinum site lists a release date of Oct. 27. https://www.riaa.com/gold-platinum/?tab_active=default-award&se=Lauryn+Hill#search_section
