Debate championships[edit]

Somebody should get with Will Repko, the debate coach at MSU. He will probably know all the State Championships won by ELHS over the years. He coached some of those teams, of which there were several.--Mack2 (talk) 00:35, 2 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

No, it is not ok. The talk page of an article is for discussing updates and changes to the article, not as a forum to post grievances. Removed Tag[edit]

I do not understand the recent insertion of AnomieBOT. Every person in the list is notable since they all have their own separate Wikipedia articles. Perhaps the bot needs enhancements. In any case I removed the tag as it was clearly in error. Nick Beeson (talk) 21:06, 24 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

A bot didn't place the tag, Deli nk did. A bot dated it. And very simply you are wrong. Adding references is an improvement to the encyclopedia. 2/3 of the entries have no references. The Wikipedia:Citing sources page says, "Wikipedia's Verifiability policy requires inline citations for any material challenged or likely to be challenged, and for all quotations, anywhere in article space."
The Wikipedia:Biographies of living persons says, "All quotations and any material challenged or likely to be challenged must be supported by an inline citation to a reliable, published source."
I believe that this list of people who attended East Lansing High School, is not "likely to be challenged". Perhaps I am wrong but why would anyone care where these people went to high school?
I believe that this information on this page is not significant to anyone but those who went to East Lansing High School. No one else is going to care. To put it another way, only people reading the East Lansing High School page will see this list, and most of them will not care if someone is listed who did not actually attend.
I also think finding "reliable verifiable" references to this fact is probably impossible. That these people went to East Lansing High School is generally acknowledged, I can find strong evidence for this contention without strain, but what is hard is finding a reference to the fact.
So I think that either they need to be left as is without references and without the tag asking for the impossible, or they need to be removed from the list—not a solution I endorse, because every single one of the main biographical articles strongly indicates these people all went to East Lansing High School.
My original post spoke only to "notability", and correctly pointed out, that to have a Wikipedia article, you must be "notable". It said nothing about references because I thought the above points were obvious, and did not need stating.
The comment "very simply you are wrong. Adding references is an improvement to the encyclopedia." (referring to me) is itself incorrect, because I did not say anything about references in the original post here. Nick Beeson (talk) 17:12, 25 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

I did not attend this school, and I care that the quality of edits made to this page be of the highest quality. This article exist for the readers of Wikipedia; it is not a Facebook page. Please assure that the edits to this article have reliable sources and conform to Wikipedia policies (which have been created by the consensus). Thank you. For the record, the reason I added the tag was because so many of the listings in the "Notable alumni" section are unreferenced. In my experience, it is quite common for unreferenced listings of alumni to simply be inaccurate. I think unfounded rumors that a certain "famous person went to our high school" get spread among friends and then someone adds it their high school Wikipedia article. When regular editors eventually looks for verification, they find that famous person in fact when to a different high school. Deli nk (talk) 19:22, 25 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for wanting to improve the encyclopedia, Deli nk. The truth is Wikipedia will never be able to be used as a source for any serious work due to its dynamic nature. What we can do is add as many sources as we can so those looking at Wikipedia for research can have something they can cite. Whereas I will let a new entry to a notable section slide if attendance is sourced in their bio, I remove them if it is not. And ideally at some point either myself or someone else will come back and add the source from the bio. The tag you added helps people notice that needs to be done.
