This article needs a major rewrite[edit]

I don't know wiki formatting well enough to begin, nor do I know the subject matter well enough to contribute. But this article barely touches on the use of it as a tool for training, doesn't address its modern use... It's basically useless. It only talks about it in reference to historical India, despite it having much more widespread use and still being in use today. There's a lot that could stand to be done here 68.36.48.221 (talk) 07:50, 6 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Untitled[edit]

I reverted the edit to this page by Anon15, because it is a direct copy and paste from this site which has been neither edited to fit the article nor altered in anyway from the original text, if some of the information needs to be reinserted, the ditor should use their own words.Ms408 00:49, 13 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hi MS408, I have added different language which I hope will meet the Wikipedia standards. Right now, I think that the ankus page is biased b/c it has a sort of "ancient, fancy ivory handle - Hinduism" flavor which is fine but ignores the fact that the bullhook is a tool used to train elephants via pain. Sorry! I think it is fair to mention that. I made my language as polite and academic as I could. It's all not only verifiable, but amply verifiable. The website which I would suggest adding is: http://www.circuses.com/bullhooks.asp. It is as valid to have that site there as the Hindu websites. Don't mean to offend but there is no need to hide the unsavory uses and aspects of this tool.

Cool. Thanks you very much. I went ahead and took the liberty of adding the page you referenced to the articles referfences list.Ms408 04:54, 13 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you Ms408! I am a Wikipedia neophyte and appreciate your patience with me. Have a good day.

This article is extremely incorrect[edit]

Someone needs to re-write this article and site sources. It is not describing the proper use of the tool but how it is used as abuse on elephants.

I have removed unsourced material which may be outdated. The ankus is currently used in the US differently than in India of the past. A distinction should be made.--Amadscientist 06:20, 10 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

This article has more to do with a tool still used[edit]

Please clarify the fact that this tool is still used today. As the article was written it had a historical as well as POV in the direction of India and Hinduism. It would work that way if it was ONLY a historic item. It is still in use today.--Amadscientist 07:00, 10 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Images[edit]

I believe this article should have a clear image of the tool that is not a stylised detail in a larger work. This ought to be the main image on the page so that people can see in a glance what is being discussed. I am not currently aware of any such images in the public domain, but am pretty sure that one could be fairly easily sourced. EthicsEdinburgh (talk) 10:12, 13 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Name change[edit]

I strongly believe that i have to change the origin name of ankus as ankusham, since the word roots are from

proto dravidian family, not from indo-aryan family(i.e.,sanskrit) . I will provide reliable sources for that! So kindly accept my proposal of name change and get avoid further edits by admin editors of this article. It's my request. Pokiridebba456 (talk) 01:12, 15 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
