New page[edit]

I have created this page becasue it is a missing (and needed) article. However, I am not on top of the subject, and I hope that other people can contribute, particularly to filling out the sections that I have left blank. Peterkingiron (talk) 15:53, 11 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Kingdom category[edit]

I note that the category has been removed. I have to confess that I was not wholly happy with the term "kingdom", but we have not got a category for quasi-sovereign Welsh lordships under Welsh rule, the counterpart of marcher lordships. At one period their rulers would be called in latin (not rex) but "regulus", which is a diminutive of king. Unfortunately, this is not satisfactory English equivalent, since "king" implies some one of ratehr greater importance. The Saxons also used "subregulus" (translated underking). If you do not like the category that I used, can you devise a better one? Peterkingiron (talk) 09:26, 12 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I can see your point, which also occurred to me. However "kingdom" is not a term I've seen being used for Elfael. Wales had numerous "sub-kingdoms", for lack of a better word, often identified with the later cantrefi, which would usually be described as "lordships" (arglwyddiaeth "lordhsip" was and is the usual Welsh term, but there are others in Middle Welsh also), but that in itself can be rather ambiguous. Yes, it is a problem, but I'm not sure what the answer is. Any new category created would have to fit in with similar wikipedia categories as well. Enaidmawr (talk) 00:07, 13 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I created Category:Marcher lordships not long ago, because it seemed to be needed. Perhaps the answer is to create a category Category:Welsh lordships for these quasi-sovereign lorships, but I am not quite sure how that should be categorised itself.
