unbalanced[edit]

besides proper citations, the article needs a balance between the bad things he did and the good ones whiel trying to maintain a W:NPOV and also add some other activities he might have done. Early years? studies? other public offices held?. --F3rn4nd0 21:02, 20 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I completely agree (despite not being a "fan" of the guy myself in any way, shape or form), though I currently am not in the best position to assist in this matter. The article needs sources, more biographical information, and more data about the rest of his administration, both good and bad (there's plenty in both categories, I'm sure). This article sounds as if it was written by the American CIA. Samper had a long history of favoring liberalization of Colombia's drug laws, a position which had a lot of popular support. This article completely omits the story of how he was shot at the airport in 1989 by the Medellin cartel -- sources differ as to whether he was the intended victim or not.

In any case, the American government was extremely unhappy with him because he didn't play ball with them... It is certainly possible that the CIA cooked up this campaign finance thing... who knows? Certainly the cocaine and marijuana businesses are big parts of the Colombian economy, and naturally the people involved in the business will try to support candidates whose policies they think will be in their favor.

But the reality is that Jesse Helms put a hold on US foreign aid because he didn't feel Samper was cooperative enough, and this was used as a tool to turn the Colombian people against him.

There is quite a lot of sourced information about him... A good starting place is "The bullet or the bribe: taking down Colombia's Cali drug cartel" By Ron Chepesiuk.

I do have a bit of bias -- his wife is my cousin.

This picture needs to go[edit]

I'm not too familiar with Samper, but it doesn't seem like I would be a big fan of his. The picture on his article looks silly and out of place though. It would be like having (http://z.about.com/d/politicalhumor/1/0/S/H/bush_turkey.jpg) for George W. Bush.--Shikata Ganai (talk) 10:01, 3 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
