Who funded the RPF, FRONASA, FREILMO, UNLA and RLA, alll of whom this article states Fred Rwigema was involved in[edit]

To set up rebel 'guerrilla' armies requires military training, arms procurement, as well as payments for each individual guerilla'a 'labour'. This requires serious funding. Where did this funding come from?

Fred RwigemaFred Rwigyema – (see talk page) Amakuru (talk) 11:41, 5 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Having always considered the two forms somewhat interchangeable, it occurred to me recently that there is a fair amount of evidence that "Fred Rwigyema" is the form that he actually used during his lifetime, and was actually his name. The "Rwigema" form appears to be one that has been adopted more recently, mainly in Rwanda itself (where he is now something of a national hero), because that's the more usual spelling there. Various bits of evidence that "Rwigyema" may actually be correct:

  • Most scholarly books which describe him appear to use the "Rwigyema" form - [1][2][3][4]
  • Newspaper articles from the time he was active appear to generally use the "Rwigyema" form - [5]
  • In Uganda (where he lived for most of his life), they overwhelmingly spell it "Rwigyema" - site:ug "fred rwigyema" (738 results) vs site:ug "fred rwigema" (10 results)
  • His birth name was apparently "Emmanuel Gisa" so the Rwigyema moniker is one he invented himself; as it is not his birth name, it does not follow that it would use Rwandan spelling

Incidentally, the article currently states that Rwigyema is an "erroneous" form, with a footnote explaining how it is wrong in Kinyarwanda lexicography. But that isn't probably relevant as he was living in Uganda at the time he assumed the name. Thanks  — Amakuru (talk) 11:41, 5 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]
