WSAECONNREFUSED Error and Spyware Controversies[edit]

Frets on Fire will try to access the internet when you start a game, and if you are not connected to the internet or your firewall software blocks the port the game will not play, giving a WSAECONNREFUSED error. Oddly, the official site says nothing about this in it's FAQ and mentions of it in the forums are deleted.

I Dont think the error is in the latest version, but i have examined the source code. I think that it appears that there may be an attempt in the future to add a registration key. This error could also come from the fact that the game has to create a game server when you start.
Frets on Fire is not spyware. It only connects to localhost (127.0.0.1) and to the high score server.[1] Cheers, --unforgettableid | how's my driving? 01:12, 13 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Running on PPC macs[edit]

Just so you guys know, part of the problem that most PowerPC macs have been running into on it are with a font in FoF. If you open up the Frets on Fire package and replace Resources/Data/default.ttf with Chalkboard.ttf from your /Library/fonts/ directory (root of your hard drive, not in your FoF package), you should e able to get it working. Vandalism[edit]

There seems to be a big problem with vandalism on this article. Either entire sections of the page get deleted by someone for no apparent reason or then it seems that the owner of fretsonfire.net has a tendency to remove links to all other fan communities. I cannot confirm this, but due to the only one being left is fretsonfire.net, I would suppose it is somehow related to the site (fretsonfire.net is by no means official, a guy just started a warez forum with the official sounding URL). I do not think it is neccesary to lock this article as that would only render it useless, but I would like better surveillance of it to prevent needless editvandalism. -- User:Dragu 19:28:40, 10 March 2007 (EET)

More Songs[edit]

I want to post this here before i add anything to the article. At www.piratebay.org you can download songs for Frets on Fire. Its a torrent file, and may take some time to download (trust me its worth it). But it works for me, so i was wondering if i could add the link. This is because, from my point of view, Wikipedia would get into legal trouble if contributors were adding links to torrents (even if they would be relevant to the article). Let's say that some dude decides one day to add a link to a torrent to an ISO image of GTA III which he counts to be "kewl". Then, some dude employed at Rockstar North decides to view that very article and sees the link. Legal trouble? Legal trouble. Especially if the second dude is the CEO of the company. Now, it's - to my knowledge - copyrighted content from a commercial game (in this case, Guitar Hero) that was adapted to a clone of that very game, and no one knows if that person who exported these songs bought the disk or achieved an ISO image of it in a similar way. Thus, its legality status is kind of questioned. I actually downloaded these some time ago and enjoy playing them a lot (though I suck at playing the game itself), but I would never post a link to it on Wikipedia because of the reason mentioned above. External links[edit]

Since people add links to fan sites or unofficial forums, I've added this note to the external links section. After I reverted this edit, I thought that other editors might object to this - they may know better than me. So... anyone objecting to this decision? In my opinion, external links should only be added if they give more information on the topic, such as reviews or interviews, and Frets On Fire Wiki - for example - is not only unofficial, it also doesn't give any information you can't find on the official website or in the game's README file. GH III[edit]

The article says that FoF can import songs from Guitar Hero III, but the importer guide says that it only supports Guitar Hero and Guitar Hero II. This is untrue. Some guys ripped songs from GH III by themselves and published them on P2P web sites, but the game itself doesn't import songs from GH III (just yet). Litis (talk) 19:22, 11 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Actually, it does support ripping from all of the Guitar Hero series, the FAQ on the main site has not been updated in some time, but according to the offical wiki the only one that does not work as of now is "Guitar Hero Encore - Rock The 80's." EvilHom3r (talk) 18:14, 11 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Portal:Free software: FoF is now the selected article[edit]

Just to let you know. The purpose of selecting an article is both to point readers to the article and to highlight it to potential contributors. It will remain on the portal for a week or so. I have taken the liberty of archiving discussion that should have been somewhere else. This is not the place to discuss the deletion of an article. The proper procedure is to take all deletion arguments to WP:AfD, and then abide by the consensus (or lack thereof) presented there. Sure, you can disagree, but that means you simply list it again. The talk page is not the place to complain about the existence of an article.

Similar Games[edit]

I see the link for Dance Dance of some form which is exciting and all but does anyone have links to other similar free-software titles? In fact I think it would fantastic if someone put up a link for a prettier version (the Guitar Hero mods all have strange bugs) that still plays FoF songs ;) Or just similar software, whatever. Updated features and added reviews, information[edit]

Wow, that section was really bad. I cleaned it up, brought in reviews and other information from outside sources. This game has a lot more people playing it than the wiki article seems to indicate. I hope the changes helped clarify some of the really cool things about this game. If anyone has any comments, let me know. It really doesn't deserve deletion...hell, other computer guitar games use ITS file types for THEIR games! Legality of Software[edit]

I don't think you understand copyright. They have licensing for the songs they distribute copies of so it's ok. If people in their own homes use unlicensed songs then that's like someone loading an unlicensed photo into Photoshop. There's no liability. 202.78.240.7 (talk) 22:42, 16 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

This is not the place to discuss whether or not the software is legal, but just to answer your question, the in-built features and songs which come with it have all been licensed and they have the right to use them. User made songs do not affect the legality of the product, so Unreal Voodoo do not have to accept liability on whether users make songs out of copyrighted material.
