English spelling[edit]

When looking at English spelling, it stroke me as odd how the sound /k/ could be spelled both with c and k in native words, although later I realised it looks like k was used before i and e, and c in other cases. I imagine that historically, c was palatalised before i and e in several words (child, chip, chicken etc.) and the k was used to denote that palatalisation didn't occur, similar to Italian ch spelling before front vowels. Brighter?[edit]
