Old talk[edit]

The tables don't make sense at first, until you realize the numbering is in octal (base-8). Is this the accepted standard (most digital tables these days seem to use hex instead) -- and if so, what would be a good way of describing this? I'm happy to help, but unfamiliar with the standards...
