[edit] Tortured characters
I am not sure if this applies to his other roles, but reading about his roles in Cool World and In Treatment, he seems to play people who become withdrawn within their specialties to the point of antisocialism who are tempted to escape through women who want to use the character to change themselves, does this come up in any other roles?
