Elephant Scene Claims not Supported[edit]

The section on the home video release claims that a scene depicting an elephant's trunk having larvae removed from it is often "mistaken" for real stock footage, but none of the citations given support the claim that this is a "mistaken" belief. They are all just reviews calling it real stock footage. A cursory google search turns up no information describing the footage being created with effects, only references to it being "real stock footage." — Preceding unsigned comment added by 96.32.152.189 (talk) 08:54, 4 June 2014 (UTC) Upon viewing the edit history I see this is because those citations were originally included in an earlier edit that claimed it was real footage, and a user named Frigidaire elected to "correct" this based on the claim that "to [his] knowledge" no such case actually exists in nature. This is a reasonable supposition (I happen to agree that it is probably an effect, and not "real") but this does not hold up to the standards of verifiable information that should be included in an encyclopedia. All I have been able to find on google is several different sources speculating on whether or not there is an effect by visually examining the footage, but this is no the same thing as authoritative information. Especially when it uses cites that do not support this claim to give it the appearance that it has been verified. At best it should be listed as "there is debate" or "speculation" about the veracity of the footage unless someone can provide an actual source that mentions specific knowledge of how the footage was created for the film. A hunch or an opinion is not the same thing as information. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 96.32.152.189 (talk) 09:24, 4 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Obscure stuff like this is always hard to source. But do we really need a source to say that an obviously simulated special effect is simulated, not reality? In a giant monster movie, no less. I'm not saying I was there when they were filming, or that I'm an expert of special effects, but it's clearly fake. Entertaining the idea that it could be real is misleading, as it adds undue weight to the article per WP:UNDUE. It is, however, noteworthy. I can't find a single reliable source for describing that scene (saying that there is a "debate" or "controversy" or "speculation" isn't true, because no one noteworthy is talking about it), and honestly, the sources cited aren't reliable for anything either. So I'll be removing those. If you've found any sources worth using I'd invite you to share them. Friginator (talk) 00:31, 5 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Merge discussion[edit]

Well of course they should be merged-- They're the same movie, just different transliterations from the Japanese. Redirect one to the other. I think the "Jiger" spelling is more appropriate than "Jaiga" here, as an English-language source, but either is fine. -- Rizzleboffin 05:22, 30 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The merge is made; i opted for Gamera vs. Jiger instead of Gamera vs. Monster X, which i think would be more appropriate but for the confusion it would cause. —Crazillatalk|contribs 15:00, 8 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
