Sam and Garnet Hughes and Currie[edit]

The page states that after Currie gained command of the Canadian Corps (in 1917, following Battle of Vimy Ridge and subsequent departure of Sir Julian Byng as Commander) that he refused to employ Garnet Hughes as a frontline divisional commander despite urging from Sam Hughes, "the Minister of Militia and Defence". However, Hughes senior had been removed from his ministry in the fall of 1916 while the Corps had already come under Byng's command. I concur. Daniel G. Dancocks in "Welcome to Flanders Fields" states that as Currie's star continued to rise through 1916 culminating in his protion to command of First Division CEF, Sam Hughes would have expected Currie to pull Garnet with him, something that Currie refused to do after Hughes' performance in Second Battle of Ypres. Once Sam Hughes lost his job in late 1916 -- almost six months before Currie took over as commander of the Canadian Corps -- that would have removed all pressure on Currie to promote Garnet.
