Translation of "Bund"[edit]

Question: shouldn't 'Bund' be translated as 'Federation'? The Bundesrepublik Deutschland is generally translated as Federal Republic of Germany, so shouldn't it be German Football Federation??? - 62.158.92.17 17:15, 20 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

You have a point there. The German word for 'Association' would be 'Verband'. DFB means 'German Football Federation'. Before its inauguration, there were half a dozen regional 'Verbände' already in function and these became more or less independent members of the new nationwide 'Bund'. - Another thing, 2nd last paragraph: "DFB and the Saarland were squred off in the Qualifiers", don´t know that word!? -- Best, SpVggLieth (talk) 08:35, 3 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The international English media is wrong for doing so and we should not cater to that wrongness. There are many non-English speaking countries where it's called a federation such as Mexico (Federación Mexicana de Fútbol Asociación), Spain (Real Federación Española de Fútbol), and France (Fédération Française de Football). We don't change those names to "association" in the English articles about them, why the DFB? "Bund" is the German word for "Federation" or "Federal", hence the Bundesrepublik Deutschland (Federal Republic of Germany), while the German word for association is "verband". It seems that the DFB make use of "German Football Association" on the English section of their own website here.
