I commented out the citations linked to FishBase (Froese, Rainer; Pauly, Daniel (eds.) (2006). "Stereolepsis gigas" in FishBase. February 2006 version.) because the link returns the message "This species is not yet available on the public version of FishBase.". -- Donald Albury 14:42, 13 January 2007 (UTC)
I have dived with literally hundreds of these fish over the past decade and have never seen a situation where they could be considered harmful to humans except through accidental contact. Even when males were in combat over mates, and swam right at me, they veered off and avoided making contact despite their aggressive behavior. The only incident I am personally aware of involving a "negative" interaction between a bass and a diver occurred when a local instructor was trying to feed a bag of frozen peas to smaller fish. A giant sea bass did come up and suck his arm into its mouth up past his elbow, but it did not harm him.
