Grand Strand (South Carolina) → Grand Strand – Disambiguated for an article about a television show that was deleted. There are no other Grand Strands in wikipedia anymore, and the page shouldn't be the disambiguation page. Kevin_b_er 21:17, 11 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

"It is said that Grand Strand term was coined by The Myrtle Beach Sun columnist Claude Dunnagan in 1949.[2] and "Strand" itself derives from the German, meaning "beach".[citation needed] In fact, Dunnagan wrote a column "From the Grandstand" dated November 19, 1949, in The Myrtle Beach News, and one called "From the Grand Strand" on December 3, 1949. The Sun was not published until 1950.[3]"

Appears to be a squabble or debate regarding the origin of the term "Grand Strand" and while German term "strand" does translate into beach, it needs citing even if the book mentioned in [2] does inform of this. The subsequent information on an article in the Myrtle Beach News versus the Sun has no references since that blog is no longer in existence. To-Do List[edit]

Andrews, SC should not be included in the list of cities and towns along the grand strand. The town is 30 miles inland, and has nothing noteworthy as far as tourism is concerned. Looking at the article (or driving through the town) you wouldn't get any sort of impression that you were near the beach or any sort of tourist destination. The only way it should be mentioned in reference to the Grand Strand is as a warning about speed traps in little towns along the way.

Also, if you're going to include Conway, you should also include Socastee. Neither are really beach towns, but at least Socastee is close to the coast and along the route the Grand Strand follows.

Litchfield Beach and North Litchfield Beach should be included, between Pawley's Island and Murrel's Inlet. They started off as private clubs but have turned into resort-like beach destinations. They have permanent and lots of rental property. See The Litchfield Company for a poorly detailed article on the background. However, both appear on state maps and fit in with the theme of the Grand Strand.

Ocean Grove Beach could also appear in the North Myrtle Beach list of neighborhoods/beaches. I noticed it's redlinked in the Crescent Beach, South Carolina article. It also appears on the maps, but I don't know how separate it is from the actual city of NMB.

A LOT more could be added to the article, though I imagine a good bit would be duplicated in the various town/city articles. At a minimum, a list of attractions should be added, including the Freestyle Music Park, Brookgreen Gardens, Huntington Beach State Park, Myrtle Beach State Park, and Myrtle Waves water park.

Geographic/Ecological information could be included to talk about salt marshes, Carolina Bays, tidal estuaries, Winyah Bay.

Historical informations could be included to document the growth of the region, as well as traditions such as the Gullah culture and antebellum plantations.

Economic considerations could be given to the region as a major tourist destination.

I'm sure there's even more that could be added to make this a much more thorough article. I'm also pretty sure nobody's going to come around and do it, so I guess this is more of a to-do list for when I have time to make the changes. Lime in the Coconut 14:15, 15 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Merge?[edit]

Most of this article seems to have been copied from Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. Is there any need for this article if all that can be written has already been written elsewhere? Climate[edit]

The statement "According to Köppen climate classification, the Myrtle Beach area has a humid subtropical climate that is heavily influenced by the Atlantic Ocean, giving the area a more oceanic feel." shows that a citation is needed. But when reading definitions of humid subtropical climate and the oceanic climate it does not seem that the Grand Strand exactly fits an oceanic climate but does fit a humid subtropical climate definition. An oceanic climate, per the definition on Wikipedia, "features warm, but not hot summers and cool, but not cold winters, and a relatively narrow annual temperature range. It typically lacks a dry season, as precipitation is more evenly dispersed throughout the year." A humid subtropical climate is "characterized by hot, humid summers and generally mild to cool winters." To be fair, words such as "hot", "warm", "cold" and "cool" are more subjective than objective in many cases. To me, having grown up in the Midwest, the weather here is cool not cold in the winter; but having been here for a little over a third of my life now, there are times I find the "cooler" winters here down-right COLD!

The oceanic climate article states: "Summers are also cooler (often much cooler) than in areas with a humid subtropical climate. Average temperature of warmest month must be less than 22 °C (72 °F) and that of the coldest month warmer than −3 °C (27 °F) although American scientists prefer 0 °C (32 °F) in the coldest month." While the Grand Strand has an average temperature of 1 ºC (34 ºF) in its coldest month (January per the climate data in the Grand Strand article), its warmest month, July, has an average temperature of 33 ºC (91 ºF), which is higher than what the definition of oceanic climate states. On the other hand, the article on the humid subtropical climate states "The Köppen definition of this climate is for the coldest month's mean temperature to be between −3 °C (26.6 °F) and 18 °C (64.4 °F), and the warmest month to be above 22 °C (71.6 °F)." The average temperatures in the Grand Strand do fit this definition.

As for precipitation, it is defined as "both adequate and reliable throughout the year in oceanic climates" and as "either accompanied with a dry winter (Köppen: w) — or has no distinguished dry season (Köppen: f)" in the humid subtropical climate. According to the table on the Grand Strand page, it gets an average of 76.5 mm (3.01 in) in November up to an average of 187.5 mm (7.38 in) in the wetter month of August. In summer, it is not odd to have periods of showers nearly every afternoon as is stated in the article. Violent storms are common and generally move through fairly quickly. Straight line winds that do damage occur at times as do tornadoes, such as the July 6th, 2001 tornadoes that hit the Myrtle Beach area. I've seen accumulated winter precipitation in the form of snow and/or ice maybe 5 or 6 years of the nearly 15 years I've lived here. One year it was 4 inches (the winter of 2000 after Hurricane Floyd hit in 1999; snow and ice in late January 2002, an ice storm in 2004, 3-5 inches throughout the area in February 2010, and apparently this year it also snowed some. Another time or two I recall having flurries but nothing that accumulated.

In light of that, I don't think that the Grand Strand has a more oceanic feel. But since that is open to a subjective interpretation, I am uncomfortable changing it at this time. WayneyP (talk) 01:11, 15 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Definition of 'strand'[edit]

I do not want to run roughshod over anybody's project, but attributing 'strand' to a (presumed) modern German word is absurd. Please note the highlighting at the bottom of the dictionary quote:

Where's a map?[edit]

Any article about a geographical entity must include a map showing where it is. A word description like "from Little River to Winyah Bay" is useless to the millions of readers who have no idea where Little River and Winyah Bay are.
