Rewrite[edit]

I am currently researching this topic, and intend to do a near-total rewrite of the article over the coming days in order to both expand it, and bring it up to date. If anyone reading this would like to contribute their knowledge to this effort; then I will try to incorporate anything you leave here. EdwardRussell (talk) 21:41, 13 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I have reconstructed most of it. I realise that some of the references aren't working properly. I have put all of the necessary information in the file (go to edit it, and all info is there). I'm not used to doing anything more than minor edits on Wikipedia pages; so while I will come back to mend all of the links, I'd be grateful if anyone would be kind enough to fix them! Some evaluations[edit]

I am a student looking to expand certain aspects of articles pertaining to the HIV/AIDS epidemic in Africa for a class project. I believe that this article is well-written, with each fact referenced with a reliable reference (or references); for example, use of information from the CIA World Factbook, which has a section on HIV/AIDS, was particularly appropriate. The references also maintain a neutral tone, which in effect allow the article to maintain a neutral, factual tone throughout. As the citations mostly come from Factbooks or global health reports that are comprised of statistics, close paraphrasing is not an issue in this article. The article discussed Quett Masire (president of Botswana)'s plan to combat the HIV/AIDS epidemic in 1997, but did not expand on what came out of this plan, as Masire predicted that the spread of AIDS would be contained by 2016. Furthermore, the article states that despite Botswana being the nation with the 2nd highest prevalence of HIV globally, it is equipped with strong infrastructure to test for HIV. I think this should be expanded on: what are some types of this "infrastructure", and why has it not helped Botswana deal with the epidemic by locating specific sources of the spread of HIV? Additionally, the most updated information about the epidemic is in 2011, when Botswana's Ministry of Education introduced new HIV/AIDS education technology for schools. What is the current status and effectiveness of this program, in 2017? Are there other initiatives that were launched since 2011 that have made a significant impact (or not) to control this epidemic? While the article discussed the prevalence and efforts to control the epidemic, I think it should also expand on the main causes of this epidemic: how and why is the disease being spread at such high rates (ex: lack of understanding how the disease is transmitted?) The article could also discuss the societal problems that arise with being diagnosed with HIV/AIDS: are families generally supportive, or if one discloses HIV (if they have even been diagnosed), is it a taboo? I think focusing on societal attitudes toward HIV/AIDS in this article will add some depth about barriers to combat its spread. STohme (talk) 21:46, 14 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Proposed edits[edit]

I plan to edit this page by adding sections about barriers to treatment in Botswana, both cultural and economical, and about main causes of the pandemic in Botswana. I also plan to update the 'efforts to control' section with the most updated information (from the past decade) regarding success or failure of any initiatives launched to combat the pandemic. My user page contains some references I plan to use in my revisions of this page, and more information on my proposed edits. STohme (talk) 22:06, 19 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]
