Scope[edit]

There needs to be more coverage of any and all hatred that the town has or did receive in the aftermath of the events. Such would make for a much more invigorating article, I think. --Chr.K. (talk) 06:47, 17 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Scope re:[edit]

With the exception of the initial shock shortly after the incident took place, there has been little in the way of repercussions regarding the town itself. I have lived in Herrin for the majority of my life, and almost everyone here is aware of the black mark in their community's history. Many regard the actions of the striking miners as right and just due to the strong union mentality that is expressed throughout the area. Although I understand the miners plight, I find it difficult to condone the actions that were taken in their efforts to gain fair treatment from the area's mine owners.

I did notice one oversight in the article. It was regarding the death of Klan representative S. Glenn Young. The man who killed him was an officer in an anti-Klan organization known as The Knights of the Flaming Circle. His name was Ora Thomas, and from all accounts of the incident, the gun battle took place in the Orient Hotel in Herrin. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Psims1968 (talk • contribs) 07:05, 26 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

New information on burials[edit]

The Chicago Tribune published information relating to the 1990s reselling of many of the burial plots of the original 1922 victims. White union members?[edit]

"the owner's guards shot and killed three white union miners in an exchange of gunfire." Why does the article specifically reference the race of the murdered union members? How does this have any relevance?

Reply: The article currently states that Herbert David Croly wrote that "... the union miners were likely to escape punishment for killing the African-American strikebreakers ...". This suggests that the conflict was between white strikers and African-American strikebreakers. However, I find NO contemporary newspaper accounts that mention the race of any strikebreakers. This at a time when it certainly would have been noted.
