Capt. Willian Hilton Sr. & Jr.[edit]

I think this refers to explorer Capt. Wm. Hilton, Jr., tavern keeper, ferry operator, Kittery, Maine; is father, explorer Capt. Wm. Hilton, Sr., of Eliot, Maine, arrived New England 1621 on the "Fortune", followed 1623 by wife Mary (or Ellen Mainwaring?) and children on the 'Anne'. Supposedly I descend Jr's brother, Exeter, N.H., lawyer, Edward Hilton, Sr., who wed Mrs. Catherine Shapleigh Treworgy. I did not note a biography on Sr. or Jr., but should Wikipedia have either, an internal link would be nice. In 1663, Jr., supposedly "purchased" and named the "Cape Fear River". Today's Brunswick River, as per the London 1664, "A Relation of a Discovery made off the Coast of Florida..", was named the "Hilton River". The Hilton/Brunswick River is on the west side of Eagle's Island (named for rice plantation owner, not bird), where post WWII, the Liberty and Victory ship WWII fleet was once secured to Spanish Moss covered Live Oaks, ashore. On the eastern side of Eagle's Island flows the Cape Fear River with the Wilmington shore Hilton Hotel looking towards the once Hilton River. Mrs. Catherine Shapleigh Treworgye/Hilton's father, Capt. Nicholas Shapleigh (Shapely in 'Relations') drafted the early charts of the CFR. Wm. Hilton Sr., was supposedly the son of Roger Hilton of Hylton Castle, England, as per: Eric Wm. Lamberton's 2001 (revised 2004), copyrighted book "The Hyltons of Hylton Castle", Monkwearmouth, England. He says William's brother Edward, was a member of the English Fishmongers Guild. My ancestors Govs. Dudley and Winthrop; supposedly were also members of the Fishmongers Guild? Frankly I have a hard time keeping the Hiltons and their dates straight, likely I've erred? ∞ focusoninfinity 23:29, 14 August 2011 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Focusoninfinity (talkcontribs)

Gullah/Geechee[edit]

There has been some discussion about the native islanders and if they are called Gullah and/or Geechee. From what I can tell the Gullah and Geechee may refer to different origins in Africa [1] but is often used synonymously (like dictionary.com or other gullah/geechee culture websites). When I lived on Hilton Head in the 1970-80s, I remember both terms being used. Rearden9 15:56, 25 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Living on the island for my whole life, i've heard it done both ways actually.......i'm not sure which is correct, and i'm under the impression it's both. Not that the culture itself is very vibrant anymore.

Opening paragraphs[edit]

I'm not entirely sure what to do with this sentence:

Although the town occupies most of the land area of the island, it is not coterminous with it; there is a small part near the main access road from the mainland, William Hilton Parkway, which is not incorporated into the town. Hilton Head (the island) therefore has a slightly higher population (34,407 in Census 2000, defined as the Hilton Head Island Urban Cluster) and a larger land area (110.45 km² or 42.65 sq mi) than the town. [1]

I just don't think it belongs in the opening paragraph. It's too technical. MoodyGroove 01:39, 1 February 2007 (UTC)MoodyGroove[reply]

The above captioned paragraph has been placed under Demographics. MoodyGroove 02:25, 1 February 2007 (UTC)MoodyGroove[reply]

Town's official name[edit]

For the record, the Town's official name is the Town of Hilton Head Island. That's why it's listed that way at the top of the City Infobox. MoodyGroove 01:39, 1 February 2007 (UTC)MoodyGroove[reply]

GA Hold[edit]

  1. The line about the smoking ban in the lead is out of place. Put in appropriate section in the body.  Done
  2. format the web link in infobox so it displays "official web site"  Done
  3. make lead more of a summary of the article. for example, demographics is well summarized, but history isn't covered. Lead should be 3-4 paragraphs.  Done
  4. budget and departments sections are only one sentence. Expand them or merge into another section. One sentence does not make a section.  Done
  5. Ref 10 needs to be formatted like the other web refs  Done

Big Brother 20 contestants: Notable People additions[edit]

I'd like to suggest the addition of two of the "houseguests" from the most recent (currently ongoing) season of CBS' reality TV Show "Big Brother". Contestants Tyler Crispen and Angela Rummans both have links to the town (Crispen is a resident and Rummans, though no longer living there, is a native, as it is her hometown) and appear together on the show's 20th Season. Both contestants are still on the show at this time having had what would generally be considered successful runs thus far, and both have notably mentioned and/or referenced their town of origin multiple times, both to eachother (they are also in a "showmance" together... a romantic relationship on the show) and to other houseguests. Rummans brought a "Hilton Head" sweater onto the show with her, and it has since been worn during aired scenes by both the aforementioned houseguests.

That having been said, I figure they would both be worth adding to the "notable people" section of the page, given their mutual connection to Hilton Head and the far reaching popularity of the Reality Show they currently appear on. As such, I figured I'd suggest their addition here. Chancellor1 (talk) 02:40, 26 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]

My habit is to remove any "notable residents" whose notability has not been established by having a WP article successfully created for them. I recommend waiting to add any person as a "notable resident" to any article about a place until their notability has been demonstrated by the successful creation of a biographical article about the person in Wikipedia. - Donald Albury 16:20, 26 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]
