New addition to Houston Community College[edit]

I hope that someone will include the following information on this page. I have been asked not to revise it since I work for the college. It is an important update from the outdated content that is currently posted:

Incomplete and outdated info[edit]

Can someone please help me with edits to this page? I have been prohibited from making changes because I work at the college. Here is a link to the 2018 HCC Fact Book: http://www.hccs.edu/about-hcc/institutional-research/hcc-fact-book/FactBook2018.pdf. Page ii contains more up-to-date info regarding HCC and its history. All of the references to UH and TSU and others make the existing history section very confusing. Page 20 contains the latest numbers on international students. The current citation also includes no reference to HCC's 15 Centers of Excellence and it's online college, which did not exist when this page was created. There are also more notable alumni: Designer Chloe Dao and James Beard Award-winning chef Hugo Ortega. The Qatar campus no longer exists.

@Jevansdavis: It would be very helpful if you could explicitly describe the edits you'd like made to the article. That makes it easy for us to (a) review the edit to see if it's something we are comfortable making to the article using our own account and (b) copy-and-paste the exact text into the article. @Elkevbo: I would like for the first graph to contain the following: "Houston Community College (HCC), also known as Houston Community College System (HCCS) is a community college system that operates community colleges in Houston, Missouri City, Greater Katy, and Stafford in Texas. An open‐admission public institution, HCC provides academic courses for transfer to four‐year institutions and awards associate degrees and certificates in more than 70 fields of work; as well as, continuing education and corporate training, lifelong learning and enrichment programs and adult education. It is notable for actively recruiting internationally and for the large number of international students enrolled, more than 9,700 in 2018. Its open enrollment policies, which do not require proficiency in English, are backed by a full-time 18-month English proficiency program and remedial courses."


Replace the entire history section with the following: "The Houston Community College District was created under the governance of the Houston Independent School District (HISD) as the result of a public referendum on May 18, 1971. In August of that year, more than 5,700 students enrolled in workforce education courses held at the Houston Technical Institute (housed in what was then HISD’s San Jacinto High School). In the following semester, academic transfer classes were added and taught at six HISD locations. By 1977, with an enrollment of more than 28,000 students, HCC was accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC). HCC separated from HISD in 1989, establishing its own Board of Trustees and taxing authority. HCC restructured in 1991, creating five regional colleges, as well as the College Without Walls and selected six college presidents. The president of HCC then became the HCC System Chancellor. The Coleman College for Health Sciences was established in 2004. In 2014, instructional programs were organized into 15 Centers of Excellence, providing increased focus for credit programs. A seventh college, the HCC Online College, was created in 2018."

The reference to State Rep. Jim Murphy having been a trustee in the history section seems odd, but it is not a point worth quibbling about.

In the notable alumni section, please add "fashion designer Chloe Dao and James Beard Award-winning Chef Hugo Ortega".

I will not edit the introduction or history sections as you requested because the text you are requesting to be added into this article was directly copied from other copyrighted material.
I agree that the reference to Jim Murphy is odd and I'll remove it shortly (I saw it myself earlier today and wondered about it).
I will also add Chloe Dao to the article as her article explicitly references this college. I will not add Hugo Ortega without there either being an article about him the refers to this college or some reliable sources that attest to both his importance and his connection to this college. The material is not copyrighted and you are free to cite it as the source. It is available to be a resource.

Is there someone else with Wikipedia I can communicate with? HCC seeks nothing more than to have accurate and up-to-date information displayed. I imagine that is what Wikipedia also wants. What is there now does not accurately explain how HCC came to be or what it is and the numbers on international students are just plain outdated. Just trying to understand the process...

Hi Janice. Just to confirm, Elkevbo is correct when they mention specific requirements which come into play whenever someone is to be added to an WP:ALUMNI list. Per WP:BIO, alumni to be included must meet Wikipedia notability criteria. When alumni have their own articles in mainspace, it is not necessary for this notability to be referenced, as long as it is done in their Wikipedia article (such as the case with Chloe Dao). In the case of Ortega, his notability has not been established. Ortega may only be presumed notable if he has received significant coverage in multiple published secondary sources that are reliable, intellectually independent of each other, and independent of the subject.[1]
  • "What is there now does not accurately explain how HCC came to be or what it is and the numbers on international students are just plain outdated."
What is there now, or was there previously, was found to be insufficiently paraphrased from the source material. All information added to Wikipedia must be in your own words, using your own phrasing. Please rewrite the proposed text so that it meets these standards. When ready to proceed with the properly paraphrased content as well as the requested references concerning Mr. Ortega, kindly open a new edit request at your earliest convenience. Thus, biographical entries submitted by Ortega to Chron.com in regards to him being given an award do not contribute toward notability, nor do web pages about himself written by him or his website's staff members.
Quick note: No, material added to this article, including alumni, does not have to be independently notable. Both WP:ALUMNI and WP:N are quite clear on this subject.
