PoV[edit]

This page concerns me at the moment because it gives undue weight to a US document without providing the official response by the Government (of Eritrea) in question. Merhawie

The entry as it stands seems to be very neutral and general, and clearly states that generalizations made are from Western governments and NGOs. In addition, in recent years there has been well-documented viewpoints and surveys done that consistently give a poor grade for the human rights situation in Eritrea. Aiidris

That was the function of discussion which you did not participate in. My biggest disagrement with your edit is that it introduces a Western bias by implication that the ALL observers characterize Eritrea's human rights situation in a negative light. In fact this is only the opinion/assessment of those in the West. As you removed this clarification you have introduced a POV. --Merhawie 12:56, 14 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Timid stuff[edit]

This is an appallingly thin cup of tea about one of the most totalitarian countries in the world, with one of the worst human-rights records in the world, and according to Reporters Without Border, with the second-least press freedom in the world after North Corea! Prisons for escaping military service (which is basically life-long for both men and women) or for trying to escape the country (which is illegal for nearly everyone) are located in secret places unknown to the inmates' families, just to mention an example of what this article needs to discuss.

I don't know about what sources are valid for Wikipedia in this regard, but every single Eritrean, both in exile and inside the country, has a personal story about friends og relatives escaping or languishing away in these secret prisons.

2015 UN Report on extreme human rights abuses - on a scope and scale seldom witnessed elsewhere[edit]

Have added a reference to the UN report described in the Guardian, detailing allegations of extrajudicial executions, torture, indefinitely prolonged national service and forced labour, and indicated that sexual harassment, rape and sexual servitude by state officials are also widespread.
