Subdivision code for Netherlands (not Kingdom)[edit]

Reading Kingdom of the Netherlands and Netherlands, I understand that the latter is one of the constituent countries of the former, along with Aruba, Curaçao, and Sint Maarten. But this page seems to claim that the ISO 3166-1 alpha-2 code "NL" applies to the smaller Netherlands, despite also listing subdivision codes for its peer countries. Should "NL" apply to the larger or smaller "Netherlands"? If the former, what is the subdivision code for the latter? If the latter, why isn't there a country code for the former? Thanks, Bovlb (talk) 22:49, 24 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]

This ISO page says that "NL" is associated with "the Kingdom of the Netherlands". It also lists various provinces and islands within the smaller country Netherlands. So now I'm thinking that "NL" must be for the larger Kingdom, and the smaller country has no code. Bovlb (talk) 23:07, 24 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]
The cited ISO page states, furthermore, that "NL" contains three countries. This is the case for the larger Kingdom of the Netherlands, not the smaller Netherlands, so it would appear that the code refers to the larger entity.--RV1971 (talk) 21:54, 1 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
