Chopped a bunch of WP:OR and hype. Is this just a promo for Gross's books? How about a reference to James Lovelock and/or other prominent independent scholars who have made notable contributions. Seems too often an independent scholar is someone pushing a fringe science idea that has been rejected by mainstream academia for various reasons. Vsmith (talk) 16:05, 8 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

that's a reasonable critique & should be addressed. i also deleted what seemed to me to be an entirely false -- as well as unsupported -- assertion that military history is marginalized in academia .... --Lquilter (talk) 18:29, 22 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
