Bloody Island reference[edit]

I have not seen an academic source related to the Humboldt Massacre use the name "Bloody Island." Perhaps there has been a mistake. Is it possible that an editor confused the Eureka Indian Island site with Bloody Island in Lake County? We need a source here or this in-article reference will have to be removed (By the way, another source quoting this article will not do it). Also, not a single local historian has ever used this term that I can find. Norcalal 19:02, 22 November 2008 (UTC)

In researching Indian Island, I have not found any reference to the name "Bloody Island" even in local conterminous news accounts. I find no book references to it, the only reference I found to this use for this landform was here on this page in Wikipedia so I have removed it at same time as proposing the merge to two other pages with reference to this island. What I did find today was a report of a different infamous mass murder in 1850 |The fisherman's problem-ecology and law in the California fisheries, 1850-1980 (by Arthur F. McEvoy, ISBN-13: 978-0521385862). Whites blamed the deaths of two settlers on Indians and 150 to 200 Clear Lake Pomo were massacred by the army on "what became known as Bloody Island." The next sentence in the book says "A secret league of prominent Humboldt County citizens ten years later attacked a sleeping encampment of Wiyot people..." I suggest that a casual transposition of the information occurred at some point in the past. Ellin Beltz (talk) 19:15, 28 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
In one of those "I should have checked Wikipedia first" moments, I find a full description of the event on Bloody_Island_Massacre.Ellin Beltz (talk) 15:28, 23 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

proposal to merge[edit]

There are three pages on Indian Island, Humboldt Bay. I propose merging Gunther Island Site 67 and Gunther_Pattern into the Indian Island, Humboldt Bay. Gunther pattern refers to the type of materials found in Gunther Island Site 67 which is itself located on Indian owned and totally restricted access Indian Island in the Bay. I request full discussion of this merge to be held 'here' to reduce confusion. After the merge - if accepted, I plan to add/revise this page to include more sources and information. A photo of the memorial has been placed on the National Register of Historic Places listings in Humboldt County, California. Neither this memorial nor the one at the Samoa end of the Samoa Bridge is physically located on the Island, which is strictly off limits to the public except when invited for ceremonies including the World Renewal Dance each February. • Merge - yes, it is clearly the same place. At first I was skeptical of merging Gunther Pattern, but since it is only a paragraph about things found on the island it fits in perfectly (even 3-4 paragraphs would fit nicely). To keep the NRHP folks happy, please keep the infobox with the heading Gunther Island Site 67. Merging into Indian Island is ok, but some folks might object to the very common name - there must be 1000 Indian Islands around. However, unless Gunther Island is used as often as Indian Island, Indian Island is probably best. I'll suggest waiting a few days until the holiday is well over, then be bold and just merge. • Gunther Island as name for Indian Island was abandoned in the late 1970s or early 1980s. I tested it on Google Earth, and for "Gunther Island, California" I got nothing. For "Indian Island, California" which has been used from the 1850s to now (except for during Mr. Gunther's life), I got a pin mark directly on the center of the Island. So I think "Indian Island, California" is probably the best place to put all of it. Mr. Gunther was the host of the university employee who did the excavations, so the Gunther Phase got named after Mr. Gunther who also had stuck his name to the island as well. Merged content from Gunther_Pattern & Gunther Island Site 67 into the Indian Island page.

Indian Island (Humboldt Bay)Tuluwat Island – As stated in the article, the land was given back to the Wiyot people. They refer to it as Tuluwat Island, so that is its appropriate name. It has already been renamed in various places, such as Google Maps.
