Where does the team get its name from? What is a pacer?

Probably from the pace cars used at the Indianapolis 500. There was an existing WHA team called the Indiana Racers, that may have been an influence as well. RickK 10:15, Nov 20, 2004 (UTC)

Actually, a pacer is a horse, and this is where they got their name. When the Pacers went to the Finals, a local news station did a piece on the history of the name. You can see the definition of pacer here: http://dictionary.reference.com/search?q=pacer

The last comment is corrent. It's named after the race horse term "pacer" although the pace car connection for the 500 is also often cited. But the horse term comes from (I believe) the early ownership also had a stake in the race hroses that used to race at the Indiana State Fairgrounds - where the team first played its home games.

Main rivals?

While the introduction of a "main rivals" section is an interesting concept, truth be told it's probably far too subjective to be used as a legitimate addition to the article, in my opinion. In the opinion of this lifelong Pacers fan, the Pistons and Celtics are the only two teams on that list that are easy locks for that distinction. It's true they had a heated rivalry with the Knicks in the mid-'90s, but with the decline of that team, the Knicks' current status on that list is questionable. And while the Bulls and Cavs are both Central Division opponents, I wouldn't consider either of them to be a rival, just based on a lack of playoff history between the clubs. And it could be argued that the Heat deserve inclusion on the list due to their status as an Eastern Conference championship contender the same way the Pacers are, and the 2004 second-round playoff series in which Miami nearly came back to stun the top-seeded Pacers.

In any event, everyone will have a different opinion on the topic, because rivalries can't be "proven" by fact. ekedolphin July 6, 2005 07:54 (UTC)

The External Link to Pacers Digest keeps being removed?

I have noticed once again that the External Link to the Indiana Pacers fan forum "Pacers Digest" is continually being removed. Why is this? I suspect it's simply people who don't like the site or don't like someone on the site that keep removing it out of sour grapes. Is this the standard Wikipedia goes by? May the best pest win? Pacers Digest is a legitimate fan forum that deserves to be on the list of external links regarding the Indiana Pacers, and if some one or some people insist on continually removing it, then something should be done to keep this childish nonsense from continuing.

The 2007-2008 Season: Signs of Growth part is incorect

The last sentence states "...improved defensive effort with the return of Jermaine O'Neal, the Pacers can see only positive in the future of the franchise." The Pacers actually traded O'Neal for T.J. Ford and others i belive. I will try to find a link.

The Brawl and Decline

I changed the wording to reflect that the decline of the Pacers began years before the brawl with the Detroit Pistons. I agree with Heitz669. The Pacers were the best team in the league at the time of The Brawl, just went downhill afterwards. "The Brawl and Decline" began in 2004 and ended in 2008 with the trade of Jermaine O'Neal. "Danny Granger Era" started in 2008. Also, why does the depth chart still show some of the 2011 free agents but not all of them, despite the fact that none of them have been signed to any team yet? Either remove all the free agents, or leave all of them alone until they are signed by another team. Consistency is important.
