[edit] New county road shield needed
I-22 was just extended to the new Co. Hwy. 77/Coalburg Rd. exit in Jefferson County, Ala. We need a shield made for the county road. Who has been doing that for us? - Realkyhick (Talk to me) 20:28, 10 December 2009 (UTC)
- Please take it to WP:USRD/S/R; this is not the place to ask for it. --Rschen7754 (T C) 21:12, 10 December 2009 (UTC)
The comments concerning the future of US 78 are totally relevant to the Interstate 22 Wikipedia posting since as of today they share the same highway. In Mississippi, Interstate 22 and US 78 share the same roadway for its entire length. In Alabama, US78 had a separate routing apart from the current I-22 that took it through the following communities (west to east)Guin, Gu-Win, Winfield, Eldridge, Carbon Hill, Jasper, Sumiton, Dora, Graysville, Adamsville, Forestdale, Birmingham. The former US78 route has been re-signed by ALDOT in recent years. From west to east, between I-22 near Hamilton to Guin, as US 43, US 278, AL 171. From Guin to Jasper, as AL 118. In Jasper, from intersection of AL 118 and AL 69 to intersection of AL 69 and AL 5 as AL 69, from intersection of AL 5 and AL 69 eastward to Graysville interchange with I-22 as AL 5. All signage referring to these roads as US 78 have been removed by ALDOT.
The unanswered question remains, once Interstate 22 is formally opened, what happens to US 78 west of Birmingham to Memphis? There appears to be only three options...1. Decommission US 78 and allow Interstate 22 not to be co-signed with any other route designation, 2. Co-sign Interstate 22 with US 78 (a matter that ALDOT and MSDOT with approval from the FHWA and AASHTO must decide together) or 3. Re-sign the old US 78 routing between Graysville and Hamilton as US 78 and MSDOT would have to figure out whether to re-sign MS 178 in stretches as US 78, but due to road conditions parts of Interstate 22 in Mississippi would have to be co-signed with US 78. For example, in Fulton, Mississippi, due to the Tennessee-Tombigbee waterway, the old US 78 routing does not exist anymore. It seems that MSDOT has no intention of re-signing the old route as US 78 anywhere in Mississippi. A likely scenario (but undecided) would be to make the western terminus of US 78 at the interchange with Interstate 22 at Graysville. It will be interesting to see what ALDOT, MSDOT, the FHWA,and AASHTO will decide on this matter.
