Article quality[edit]

Why has the author of the current article been allowed to write such a flawed piece? Some months ago i visited this same page, and there was a far better article up, which was far more substantial (i.e. actually mentioned the start of Islam in Somalia) and accurate. Somaliwarrior (talk)

This article has several inaccuracies, including the statement that Islam was modified by Somalis.The authors of this article clearly wrote it with the intention of discrediting the Somali people and further isolating them from the rest of the muslim world. To really study Islam in Somalia, one needs merely to visit the country and observe. While I don't have enough knowledge of Islam in Somalia to comment either way, I would like to. Could whoever wrote the above comment perhaps help to improve upon this article? The wording seems biased. "Because Muslims believe that their faith was revealed in its complete form to Muhammad, it has been difficult to adapt Islam to the social, economic, and political changes that began with the expansion of colonial rule in the late 19th century.". The assertion is made but without any evidence to back it up. The assertion, without evidence, suggests that Islam is a pre-modern way of living. This could be a problem with the westerncentric quality of the literature on Somali Islam? Dogmatism (talk) 08:35, 28 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I am married to a somali sister and have some incite into somalia and would like to rewrite this whole article.

LoC Country Study[edit]

As the References indicate, this article incorporates text from a Library of Congress Country Study (Somalia: Table of Contents). However, as we've used the text wholesale, it does not use inline citations. The problem is that when article text is added, modified, or deleted, it is difficult to determine what portions lack attribution and which parts remain from the Country Study. Case in point: the "Rising Islamism" chapter of the Country Study (link; though this may not work permanently) reads,

In the disintegrated Somali world of early 1992, Islamism appeared to be largely confined to Bender Cassim, a coastal town in Majeerteen country. For instance, a Yugoslav doctor who was a member of a United Nations team sent to aid the wounded was gunned down by masked assailants there in November 1991. Reportedly, the assassins belonged to an underground Islamist movement whose adherents wished to purify the country of "infidel" influence.

However, the text in our article (apparently derived from the LoC original) reads,

Al-Itihad appeared to be largely very active to Boosaaso, a coastal town in far Northeast of the country. For instance, a Yugoslav doctor who was a member of a United Nations team sent to aid the wounded was gunned down by masked assailants there in November 1991. Reportedly, the assassins belonged to an underground Islamist movement whose adherents wished to purify the country of outside influence.

This changes "Islamism" to a specific group, "Al-Itihad," and changes the location of a specific event from "Bender Cassim" to "Boosaaso." Yet, there is no source for the modified text. I'm not sure if the rest of that section came from the LoC or not (I haven't checked). We'd have to really comb through this, I think, to distinguish public domain text from unsourced assertion. That, or roll back to the old version that is directly based on the Country Study. This illustrates one problem with the use of public domain texts: since this is a wiki, text can, and does, get changed. I recall some community-wide discussion about more properly integrating Country Study material (using in-line citations etc.) but right now I can't locate it. I've since found that additional text in the "Rising Islamism" section was copied, at least in part, from a conference paper (link). Unlike the LoC Country Study, this is not public domain, and I have removed the text.
