Embarrassing[edit]

Birth date[edit]

Is 20 August Teagarden's official birth date? The New York Times and Los Angeles Times obituaries both give 20 August, but the Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians and the American National Biography both give 29 August as his birth date. Most influencial "white" trombonist pre-bebop.[edit]

This should be changed to most influential trombonist of the pre bebop era, as trombonist of all races consider him the most influential trombonist before JJ Johnson. An argument could be made for Fred Beckett, except for the fact that he is hardly a household name among trombonists today. Teagarden is another story altogether. If you line up 100 well-known professional jazz trombonists and ask them "who is the most influential trombonist before JJ Johnson" 99 of them will say Jack Teagarden. Of the other major stylists of the era (Trummy, Higgenbottom, etc.) the only player whose style, sound, melodic syntax, and overall approach had obvious carryover into bebop was Teagarden.
