Dubious footnotes for dubious assertions[edit]

There are several highly dubious statements which are ostensibly documented with footnotes. I have removed the first, "He held official rank in the NKVD," which is emphatically NOT documented by the footnote that was attached to the statement. I will be investigating the journal article cite which purports to document his leadership of the "Central Control Commission" (of what, the CPUSA???) that "planned" the "execution" of J.S. Poyntz. Ditto the assertion that he claimed to be an old time Chekist. There is some really bad footnoting that has gone on here, it seems. Carrite (talk) 03:24, 27 April 2011 (UTC) For the record, THIS DIFF is the one I am concerned about. The first of these purported footnotes simply did not pan out. The other two are currently being examined. For now, I'll assume an honest mistake on the first, but users are strongly cautioned against assuming the second two assertions are necessarily correct just because they have a footnote number showing. The second purported footnote: Letter of Introduction from Kaganovitch and Yezhov 1/31/1929, translated, New York FBI Report, 13 October 1948, Personal Papers Relating to Jacob Golos, Silvermaster file vol. 146 (FBI file 65-56402), serial 3687, p. 3 (p. 46 pdf). is also in no way relevant to the statement it purports to document, "Golos claimed to be an old time Chekist." Here is the complete text of THE PURPORTED DOCUMENT:

"This is to certify that comrade I.N. Golos has been a member of the CP US since 1919 and he left for the United States with the consent of the CC [Central Committee] CPSU." signed by Lazar Kaganovich as Secretary of the CC of the CPSU and Nikolai Ezhov as Assistant Chief of the Organization Department of the CC CPSU.

I am taking the liberty of removing the third dubious and purportedly documented statement as well, owing to the fact that the first two supplied footnotes were ~~fraudulent~~ improper. ~~I will be obtaining this journal article shortly and if this also turns out to be a fabricated footnote, appropriate steps will be taken.~~ Carrite (talk) 03:57, 27 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Here is the third dubious statement, with footnote, held here outside of article space pending verification of the footnote:

"Golos headed the Central Control Commission, which planned the execution of Juliet Poyntz, an American defector from the GRU."^[1]

This third footnote more or less checks out, albeit to page 39, not 40. Carrite (talk) 02:20, 28 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

The journal article cites a book called In a Field of Red for the dubious assertion and I am going to track that back before anything is restored by me. Carrite (talk) 14:37, 29 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Outstanding catches, @Carrite:! Sadly, there are more such problems in another paragraph:

According to archival notes taken in the early 1990s by a former KGB foreign intelligence officer and journalist Alexander Vassiliev, Golos' initial contact seems to have been with the GPU's New York station chief, Chivin ("Smith").[Chervonnaya] Another interpretation of the documents, favored by historian Svetlana Chervonnaya, argues that first contact was made by Abram Einhorn ("Taras"), a Soviet intelligence agent who worked in the United States from 1930 to 1934.[Chervonnaya]
