I'm moving this one-page article snippet from the ELs to here. It would be a good source, but I think one has to purchase the article, or subscribe, to see the whole thing:
No hyphens for James and Simon, but Rory uses one because CJ is not his birth surname.
Neither James nor his legitimate son Simon have a hyphen in their names. Rory is the illegitimate son of James. Because Rory is not a full member of the family, he uses a hyphen in his acquired (not birth) surname.
