Writing credits for "In Your Smile"[edit]

There is no evidence whatsoever that James Fox has ever claimed writing credits for the song "In Your Smile", other than hearsay based on a possibly joking remark in a radio interview. Griffin is given sole credit for this song in Allmusic guide and on all the relevant printed album and single credits - see Bring It On, The Sun Shines Brighter. To claim otherwise could be potentially libellous. Jud (talk) 11:26, 18 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Possible Conflict of Interest[edit]

It has come to the attention of several editors that there may be someone with a conflict of interest editing this page. Although the edits are clearly in good faith, I thought I'd just post some key points from wiki policies and guidelines here for the reference of anyone editing the page. Please read them and try to abide if you are considering editing this page.

From WP:AUTO

  • Writing an autobiography on Wikipedia is strongly discouraged, unless your writing has been approved by other editors in the community. Editing a biography about yourself should only be done in clear-cut cases. Wikipedia has gone through many prolonged disputes about the significance, factual accuracy, and neutrality of such articles.[1] Avoiding such editing keeps Wikipedia neutral and helps avoid pushing a particular point-of-view. Writing autobiographies is discouraged because it is difficult to write a neutral, verifiable autobiography and there are many pitfalls.
  • If Wikipedia already has an article about you - It is difficult to write neutrally and objectively about oneself (see above about unconscious biases). You should generally let others do the writing. Contributing material or making suggestions on the article's talk page is considered proper—let independent editors write it into the article itself or approve it if you still want to make the changes yourself. Facts, retellings of events, and clarifications which you may wish to have added to an article about yourself must be verifiable by third parties.

From WP:NPOV

  • All Wikipedia articles and other encyclopedic content must be written from a neutral point of view (NPOV), representing fairly and, as much as possible, without bias all significant views (that have been published by reliable sources). This is non-negotiable and expected on all articles, and of all article editors.

From Wikipedia:Avoid peacock terms - see this link for examples

  • In Wikipedia articles, try to avoid peacock terms which merely promote the subject of the article without imparting real information.

From WP:SOCK

  • The general rule is: one editor, one account.

I'll add anything else I can think of later. Please let me just stress again that if someone is editing this page who is intimately linked with its subject I appreciate they are just trying to help make the article better. However, this is considered inappropriate on wikipedia I'm afraid as it's all too easy to slip over into PR. Please post useful info and links here on the talk page so that neutral editors can edit it into the article. Thanks :-) Sassf (talk) 20:45, 19 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Too much information[edit]

This article seems a bit large for someone who's only released 2 singles - especially considering that they're 4 years apart and not even an album to his name. It seems to list every TV appearance and compilation album he's ever been on. Can this not be condensed to info that's actually worth reading? --Tuzapicabit (talk) 09:09, 6 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I agree with the above comment, however posted over a year ago i'm utterly disappointed but not at all surprised that wiki administrators have done absolutely nothing about it. The article is clearly conceited, far too detailed with irrelevant information and lacking notability. Yet again i'll mention that the singer has released two singles in his career yet he occupies more space on wikipedia than Brett Anderson, Ian McCulloch, Mick Hucknall, Bobby Gillespie, Tim Burgess, Jay Kay etc

  • So what? "Space" is not an issue. Wikipedia is not paper. And your misuse of a speedy deletion tag to correct what you see as some imbalance was rather WP:POINTy. Shawn in Montreal (talk) 03:27, 19 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Not one cite from a notable publication to support this article. Subject simply not notable. Henry O'Halloran (talk) 12:15, 19 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Subject has released an Album, an EP and 4 singles (two were top twenty hits, three Indie number ones and all four Welsh number ones)of his own and appeared in leading roles on Broadway and The West End. Toured the UK and USA in the lead role in musical theatre, represented the UK on Eurovision. appeared on the festival of remembrance twice and hosted BBC Wales Children In need Show and been support act for Tina Turner..surely that makes him notable? Agreed the article does require some paring down especially the TV appearance section jasperxp 00:36, 14 January 2010 (UTC) —Preceding unsigned comment added by Jasperxp (talkcontribs)

  • I have removed a large amount of material from the article which was clearly written by a family member, and material not directly related to Fox's work as a musician. I have also removed all the dead links and added several BBC references since there were few reliable sources. The article is now less than half the size and focusses on his career achievements. It still provides full information about his work in musical theatre and his discography.
  • Incidentally there was nothing in the article to support the claim that Fox has had any number one hits. It hasn't been deleted from the article, because it wasn't there. Rubywine (talk) 23:20, 1 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Quote from Billy Joel[edit]

Fox's fan site is cited as the source for the following:

Billy Joel said, at the press launch at Ronnie Scott's jazz club, "I'm particularly pleased that the incredibly talented James Fox will be returning to home turf; he has been wowing audiences here, and he's going to continue to do so there."

Aside from the lack of a reliable source there is a fundamental problem with this quote. It reads as though Billy Joel is speaking within the United States, and before Fox returned to the UK. But the claim here is that Joel was speaking at a press launch for the UK production, at Ronnie Scott's. Unless Joel was speaking via a remote link, or a video made earlier was being played at the press launch, then this makes no sense at all. I have not deleted it immediately because it is clearly a huge commendation for the artist, but it does need to be corrected or removed. If it is not corrected within a few months, then I will delete it. Rubywine (talk) 22:25, 1 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

there was indeed a video played to the media at Ronnie Scotts during the Movin Out press launch. there is a video of it being played however it is hosted in a site not approved by wiki.
The article was extremely bloated some relevant information as been removed in the culling. for instance lots of pages mention the fact a subject was bullied and in this case. it was the primary driving force for Fox's subsequent career.
I am unsure why the 2006 appearance on BBC TV children in need party for Pudsey Wales was removed. As Fox performed on and co-hosted the live show? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Toyahfan (talkcontribs) 06:11, 6 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I would suggest uploading a copy of the press launch video to YouTube, so that the Billy Joel quote can be referenced. It needs a source.
The material removed was non-encyclopaedic, as well as being completely unsourced. Also, please take on board that this article needs to support Fox's notability, and not to read like a fan site.
The 2006 appearance on BBC Wales Children in Need was not removed, because it was never there. I have just double checked the old article. Do you mean 2004? His performance at the BBC Wales Children in Need concert 2004 is in the Live Performances section, together with a previously missing link to a video [1]. There is no mention that Fox co-hosted the show, since I could not find any proof of that on the BBC site or elsewhere. If there is a reliable source for that somewhere, it should be added. Rubywine . talk 21:18, 6 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Where the heck is anyone supposed to get a copy of the Billy Joel Ronnie Scott statement, the fact its not uploaded on youtube doesn't mean it didn't happen, Web pages that can act as 'reputable' sources are often deleted after a time, the fact they existed at the time a statement was added to a page verified them then, they should remain so.. the knowledge being in the public domain. likewise the co-hosting of CIN, Millions of people watched him do so. myself included! you are being unreasonable... By the way I am not a fan and take exception to that suggestion and to the one that my work 'in progress' edits are badly written. Toyahfan (talk) 23:59, 6 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Unless you are the artist's personal biographer, if you are not a fan, then you must have a personal connection, which is the same difference - and puts your edits in breach of WP:NPOV. Having spent hours pulling this article into a half-decent shape, I was unimpressed at being accused of vandalism and harrassment for having reverted an error-packed edit. There is no need to add so many errors; interim edits should be checked using the 'Show Preview' button before saving. Please also stop breaking the wiki markup on this page.
It would be great to pin down that Billy Joel quote, but otherwise the article looks ok. Since you mentioned there is a video of the press launch on another site, it might be possible to upload a copy of it to YouTube. That was merely a suggestion, which I now withdraw. I now think the artist's notability is well enough established by references from the BBC, the Royal Albert Hall video, etc, that it will probably not be challenged. I sourced the 2005 Children in Need concert myself; it wasn't all that difficult. I believe the main issues have now been resolved and I have removed the tags.
