Do we really need this link? Yeah, Peach is animated, but then we would have to put List of Films at the bottom of every live-action movie page. There has to be only 1 animated film and including this link seems very vague.PowderedToastMan 05:56, 3 April 2007 (UTC)

This article has no references or citations of any kind. This is especially problematic in a section that compares book and film, as the lack of references would tend to imply it is original research, which isn't allowed on Wikipedia. Differences

The book, which was written in 1961, had a contemporary setting, but the date was never explicitly stated. The movie is clearly stated as being set during the late 1940s, instead of the present time when the film was in the works. In the book there are no songs, only a few poems. However, the film is a musical with at least one of the songs using Dahl's poem as lyrics. The movie says that the bad old rhinoceros which killed James's parents at the 1940s Long Island Light House was coming right out of the clouds to get them. In the book, the rhino is said to have "appeared right out of nowhere" and it actually escaped from London Zoo soon before gobbling them up. The Silkworm, an important character in the book, is replaced in the movie by Miss Spider, in terms of the silk needed to tether the seagulls, and the Glowworm, who was only a minor character in the book. The book doesn't reference that the Centipede was from Brooklyn, unlike in the movie where he speaks with an NYC accent. In the book, the Centipede becomes the owner of a shoe factory at the end of the story; in the movie, he runs for mayor of New York City. The Earthworm is a more pleasant character in the movie, in contrast to his somewhat unpleasant personality in the novel. He is extremely pessimistic in both, however. In the book, the Old-Green-Grasshopper can play violin music using only his legs. But in the film, he actually plays a real violin using two bows (thanks to his extra arms), and when he rubs his legs together, it chirps like a real grasshopper. In the book, Miss Spider is a more motherly figure then the young sultry figure seen in the film. In the film, Miss Spider is revealed to have been a spider James once saved from being killed by his aunts. Upon meeting him again in the peach, Miss Spider is kinder and more affectionate towards him than she is toward the others for this very reason, creating a strong personal bond between the two. None of this is indicated in the book. The book also does not mention the dream James had in the movie. In the book, they need five hundred seagulls to hoist the peach in the air and avoid a swarm or school of real live sharks. However in the film, they used one hundred seagulls, to avoid a single mechanical shark which hunted fish to make fishheads for cruel parents to feed children (as James witnesses earlier). The book does not say they needed a compass to help them navigate to New York City. In fact, in the novel, they are not even attempting to reach New York City, but just simply going wherever the peach takes them so land in New York purely by chance. The entire sequence in the movie where the inhabitants of the peach discover a frozen pirate galleon and have a duel with skeletal pirates does not occur in the book. The sinister 'Cloud-Men', important villains in the book, do not appear in the film. The rhinoceros takes their place to some extent. The rhinoceros which killed James' parents does not reappear in the book, but in the film it does, although perhaps not in physical form but ghost-like and riding with the thunderclouds, perhaps as a personification of James' fears - although this is open to interpretation. The book also does not mention James and his friends being separated when the peach hits the Empire State Building. In the book, Aunt Spiker and Aunt Sponge are crushed to death by the peach when it rolls out of the yard. In the movie, they survive this and chase James all the way to New York City (turning up in their half-flattened car, apparently after driving across the ocean floor), but James stands up to them and the bugs tie them up in Miss Spider's silk in order for the NYPD to arrest them.

I have removed the differences between the source and the film and placed them here. If anyone wants to re-add them, please integrate them into the article, preferably in "Production", and provide sources to establish notability. BOVINEBOY2008 11:39, 2 July 2009 (UTC)

New Release Date For The DVD Version

According to UltimateDisney.com, James and the Giant Peach will make it's Blu-Ray + DVD combo pack debut on August 3, 2010. Seven weeks later on September 14, it will be released as a stand alone DVD, the same day as the new release of the 25th Anniversary Edition of The Black Cauldron. Why is this article protected?

This page says that the stage musical is based on the film but it is not. The stage musical is a totally unrelated adaptation of the novel, not based on the film. box office bomb

Is the reason for the film's failure that it was released under The Walt Disney Pictures label or the release date? I think it would have succeeded if it was released under the Touchstone label instead because it's rated PG like the The Nightmare Before Christmas which was a success at the box office either due to positive reviews or being released on October 29 which is near Halloween. --Evope (talk) 03:46, 29 October 2019 (UTC)
