Sourcing Issues in Death Section Leading to Removal

Hi: The play-by-play in the death section had quite a few issues. (This is a link to the version before I edited, but I'll excerpt it in relevant part here.)

The cause of death was suicide. Late in the evening, Tammie and Jason got into an argument, and Jason locked Tammie out of his room. A few hours later, Tammie was apparently concerned for his safety and called the cops around 5 AM Saturday, November 20, 2022. When officers couldn't make contact with Jason, hotel management let the officers in, and they discovered that he hanged himself in the bathroom.

There were only two citations—one to the interview with Frank's wife Tammie and one to TMZ—both of which only came after the last sentence at the end of this paragraph. I initially began editing the section because those citations were only at the end of the section, and I felt like each of the sentences should have a citation attached. But then when I clicked on the Tammie interview and actually examined it, I realized that it contradicted what was written. Tammie: (1) denied they had argued and (2) said she didn't call the police.

These are the direct words from the source:

[Tammie] also admits they received a noise complaint from hotel guests that night, but clarifies it was due to "us enjoying the weekend and having some fun - not arguing or fighting."

"We danced and stayed out at the event until the bar closed. When we got back to the hotel, Jason and I were having a heartfelt and emotional talk in his room," she recalls. "To help Jason relax and sober up before turning down to sleep, I went downstairs to get us snacks from the lobby. I must've been gone no more than 10 minutes. I went back upstairs and began knocking on the door to no answer. I knocked repeatedly and kept calling for his name to open the door."

"I don't know if the hotel staff or a guest called the police, but after I was taken downstairs by the police, they were able to open the door and found that Jason took his life," she continues. "These were the 'disturbances' that has been brought up numerous times online."

So the article was apparently picking and choosing whether to rely on the TMZ source or Tammie interview, with no legitimate explanation. Frankly, I don't think there's any way to pick between the sources or present one version of events, but I also think this type of play-by-play doesn't belong in an encyclopedia. Why does it need to be said whether there was an argument or emotional talk before Frank's suicide? By my view, there's no basis for including Austin St. John's full statement ... I think there's a potential undue weight issue. (If we add every statement a former co-star made, we might double the length of the article. I'm going to try to strike a balance.--12.200.16.130 (talk) 02:52, 24 January 2023 (UTC)

Changed "committed suicide" to "died by suicide."

"Died by suicide" is the preferred phrasing as "committed" is a legal and religious term (similar to "committing adultery"). It's more of a colloquialism now and not typically used in official reports. 66.24.209.81 (talk) 14:29, 30 August 2023 (UTC)
