there is, extant, a Patented procedure for which he is accredited. Whether is was in use during his lifetime is but a moot point.

off topic, I have often pondered upon this man, John Mercer, whilst viewing the time from his memorial clock, from the benches of a public house across the way from it, in Great Harwood, Lancashire and that, if he had not invented red ink, the bane of every English schoolchild, (another contended claim to fame), would I have done better at school?
