Ny times obit and current text[edit]

Unfortunately the current text follows a little too closely the text of the obit from the new york times that the thomas clearly shows was being added w/out prejudicing the nytimes copyright. I nominated it for copyedit and added the obit url. --Haakonsson (talk) 22:57, 22 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The entry does plagiarize the New York Times obit; see http://www.nytimes.com/1991/02/23/obituaries/john-sherman-cooper-dies-at-89-longtime-senator-from-kentucky.html Also another respondent is quite right: Senator Cooper was never ever referred to as John S. Cooper, always John Sherman Cooper. I was born in Louisville in 1945 and have been a Kentuckian most of my life.Kagathos (talk) 18:52, 18 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Propose moving to John Sherman Cooper[edit]

Unless someone can provide a persuasive reason not to make this change, I intend to move this article to John Sherman Cooper. The reason is very simple: I am old enough to remember his service in the Senate, and the plain fact is that he was always referred to as "John Sherman Cooper" - NOT as "John S. Cooper". Deleted False Statement[edit]

I deleted the following:

"Refusing to follow the Republican Party's non-support for civil rights,"

If one goes to the Wikipedia page on the 1964 Civil Rights Act, they will find a breakdown of the final vote on the 1964 CRA, by political party. Over 80% of Senate and House Republicans voted FOR the CRA, whereas only about two out of three Democrats in both chambers voted for it. MindBodySoul (talk) 07:24, 28 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

First senate vote in 1947[edit]

The article currently says the following:

In the first roll-call vote of his career, he opposed transferring investigatory powers to Republican Owen Brewster's special War Investigating Committee.

However, Clarice James Mitchiner's book (not spelled Mitchener, please), Senator John Sherman Cooper: Consummate Statesman, says on pages 63–64 that Cooper voted against the notion that the investigation of war crimes should be moved to its own committee. His vote was in favor of keeping such investigations in an existing committee. What does the referenced source say about Brewster and a special committee? I think that's fine. I don't remember finding any sources that made the explicit statement that he had no children, so I didn't include it because I couldn't source it. However, I'm convinced this was the case based on the lack of mention of children in any of the sources I consulted. I should think the statement would be unlikely to be challenged.
