[edit] Please don't add copyrighted content to the article

In my most recent edit to the article, I removed a summary of his high school accomplishments that looked like it had been copied and pasted from MLB.com. It is ok to paraphrase this (citing proper sources) according to Wikipedia style; but please do not add copyrighted content to the article.

I also moved the discussion of his first major-league start tonight to the main part of the article, rather than mentioning it in the introduction. --Idont Havaname (Talk) 02:47, 11 April 2007 (UTC)

Hit 28 Home Runs in the first round of the 2008 Home Run Derby, breaking the previous record of 23 set by Bobby Abreu in 2005. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 74.75.78.20 (talk) 01:50, 15 July 2008 (UTC)

Bobby Abreu hit 24 home runs in 2005 not 23, At least thats what it says on the Wikipedia home run derby page —Preceding unsigned comment added by Luke-simmons (talkcontribs) 16:22, 18 July 2008 (UTC)

[edit] "Tater" vs. "home run"

An anon has been changing the description of Hamilton's first home run from "home run" to "tater". I am reverting this because "tater" is a slang term, and slang is not appropriate for encyclopedic articles. The home run article specifically lists "tater" as a slang word. --Idont Havaname (Talk) 04:55, 21 April 2007 (UTC)

[edit] "Ham Bone"?

Can someone find a reliable source for the "Ham Bone" nickname? I looked for it on Google a few days ago and didn't find much. Wikipedia should not be used as a vehicle for making nicknames catch on. --Idont Havaname (Talk) 03:59, 14 May 2007 (UTC)

I'm more worried about taters at the moment, but it does look like his high school nickname. Hey 74.138.162.255, how long will the epic tater vs. home run battle go on here? davewho2 03:27, 17 May 2007 (UTC)
I've been removing some of the nickname stuff, until it can be referenced. I have only seen 'Hammer' as a referenced nickname so far. 'The Great Hambino' can be included if someone can provide a reference for it.Leafschik1967 (talk) 17:04, 13 June 2008 (UTC)

It says on his stats that he has 9 1/2 home runs ([User:Timothy Chappell])

On July 4th, 2007, Hamilton struck out 46 times in the same game, against the San Francisco Giants. The following day, in the series closer of the Reds and Giants, Hamilton hit his 140th home run of the 2007 season, in the 6th inning with 2 outs, enhancing the Reds lead over the Giants to 66-2.

I know it doesn't matter what I say. But I can ASSURE you, as a citizen of DFW, 'J-Ham and Hambone" are nicknames for him. Most of the time you hear them during live broadcasts. There's no real way to link to that is there? Kind of a flaw in the system. I understand the reasoning behind it, but honestly, when it comes to nicknames, where do you expect a source to come from? —Preceding unsigned comment added by YcOaDtA (talkcontribs) 03:00, 15 July 2008 (UTC)

As another DFW citizen I know "the great hambino" and "the ham slamwich" are two more nicknames. Is there any way that you could reference the Josh Lewin/Tom Grieve broadcasts? —Preceding unsigned comment added by Luke-simmons (talkcontribs) 20:32, 15 July 2008 (UTC)

The only one I've seen referenced in print is 'Hambone', I just haven't had time to add it in. Not really a flaw in the system. 'I heard it on TV' just isn't a reliable source for an encyclopedia. leafschik1967 (talk) 21:00, 15 July 2008 (UTC)

"Next time you're out at the ballpark, you'll have a chance to purchase a new item for sale: the Hambino Sandwich, named after Rangers All-Star outfielder Josh Hamilton, of course." http://rangersblog.dallasnews.com/archives/2008/08/now-for-sale-hambino-sandwich.html —Preceding unsigned comment added by 173.9.5.145 (talk) 16:52, 16 April 2009 (UTC)

[edit] Four nicknames?

There are four nicknames for him given in the intro. Can we reduce this number to the 1 or 2 that are most commonly used? (Probably "Hammer".) --Idont Havaname (Talk) 12:14, 25 October 2007 (UTC)

There's no better picture to use? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 208.54.95.202 (talk) 02:24, 27 May 2008 (UTC)

This article is in serious need of cleanup as it is largely unreadable. There are run-on sentences, other sentences that begin an idea but never finish, and unrelated thoughts in the same paragraph. It looks like it was written by a 15 year old jock who can only speak jargon or slang. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 69.23.101.153 (talk) 12:02, 3 June 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Clean Up

I'm going to work on getting this one cleaned up. Given his success this season, I think it would make an excellent candidate for a Good Article with a lot of work. Leafschik1967 (talk) 00:39, 13 June 2008 (UTC)

[edit] HRD

All I want to do is clarify that he appeared in the home run derby in 2008. Unlike these articles, time keeps flowing. 365 days from now, someone may read this article and think it's a current event without a date. PUT DATES ON YOUR ARTICLES PEOPLE. Someone, please, just add "2008" to his Home Run Derby section. I'm sorry I'm not an 'established' enough user to fix it on my own. —Preceding unsigned comment added by YcOaDtA (talkcontribs) 03:04, 15 July 2008 (UTC)

The event finished 20 minutes ago, obviously the article will have a few kinks over the next couple of days as things get added and referenced. No need to rant in caps about it just yet. leafschik1967 (talk) 03:17, 15 July 2008 (UTC)

[edit] 28 home runs

Hi. Last night, at Yankee Stadium in New York, there was a Home Run Derby. Josh Hamilton set a new record for most home runs (28) in one round. He also set the second most home runs in one home run derby (35, the record is 41), and three of the top several farthest home runs (<500 ft), so please add this information. Thanks. ~AH1(TCU) 14:16, 15 July 2008 (UTC)

I am sorry for my misinterperitation. I will stop saying that Hamilton won the Home Run Derby. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 72.49.101.190 (talk) 20:14, 13 July 2009 (UTC)

Justin Morneau won, not Hamilton. The Derby has a round system and does not go by total home runs. He lost in the final round. Please stop adding incorrect information. JustSomeRandomGuy32 (talk) 20:27, 13 July 2009 (UTC)

[edit] Guide Post Article

Mr. Hamilton,

After reading your story in guide post, I felt compelled to write you. I'm sure you hear this every day, but my daughter is currently going through the same addition problem you were once faced with.

She has been in numerous re-habs and has stolen over $40,000.00 from us, her parents. She is currently serving time in prison and is expected to be released Sept. 2nd. 2009. We had wrote her off as your family wrote you off. We are now faced with deciding where she could live. We are going to help her live in a home called The Rebecca Home.(Another Re-hab place)

We such as your parents raised her well. I coached all of her softball teams and took her to church every Sunday. My wife taught all of her Sunday school classes. Even with a good up bringing. She still met evil ones that corrupted her with false promises of they loved her more than her family. It seemed every thing we tried would not help. We constantly supported her and she always went back to cocaine.

I never thought this would happen to my family, but it did. I will be sharing your guide post story with my daughter. We will pray for you and please pray for our daughter, Lisa!

God Bless,

[edit] Narron and Hamilton

I've added info about Narron being part of Hamilton's support system and, as such, how it would include a confidentiality agreement between the two parties as what is expected based on other recovery programs. The concept of calling Narron a liar when, as a matter of day to day business people lie to the press or refuse to give solid answers to protect key information all the time, seems petty.Red3biggs (talk) 19:45, 27 January 2010 (UTC)

That section is edging very close to original research, and away from a neutral point of view. Saying someone is part of a generic support system in a first person interview is different from being part of a structured program. It could all use a bit of a rewrite to come across as more neutral on both sides. Canada Hky (talk) 02:07, 28 January 2010 (UTC)
It could and im probably not the person to write it to be honest. I think it is not a neutral point of view to call Narron a liar either when, based on the relationship we do know about Narron (he is a part of Hamilton's support system, and Hamilton MUST be accountable to those in his support system) that he is unable to disclose any information Hamilton gives to him in confidence. If the web site had asked Jon Daniels and JD had answered with "The Rangers do not keep tabs of players off field activities as long as they remain within the law. Josh is under a strict program due to his past problems and at no point did he break the rules" would the web site say the rangers were liars and covering up for him? (some may disagree with this example, but i would expect my employer to keep my personal information confidential just as my work expects me to keep certain information about them confidential, and when it gets down to it that is a very simple understanding of Narron and Hamilton's relationship. Narron has a job to do by being there for Hamilton when Josh needs him)Red3biggs (talk) 06:57, 28 January 2010 (UTC)
Agreed that both sides are a little contentious right now. I might have a shot at bring both sides a little bit closer to the center in the next couple of days. Canada Hky (talk) 04:46, 30 January 2010 (UTC)

I redid the Narron section to note, as Deadspin did on their article, that Narron had not seen the photo's when asked if Hamilton was drunk in a bar and that Narron was told the incident happened in March of 2009, to which Narron could honestly answer he did not have knowledge of any such slip, and he would doubt the photo's based on that timeline. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Red3biggs (talkcontribs) 17:58, 21 April 2011 (UTC)

[edit] Relapse

This has bounced back and forth the last few days. Any objections to renaming this section, possibly something like 'Arizona Nightclub Incident' or 'Deadspin photos' etc - so we don't have to go back and forth on whether a relapse means drugs or alcohol? Just trying to find something a bit more neutral. Canada Hky (talk) 04:10, 9 July 2010 (UTC)

[edit] GA Review

This review is transcluded from Talk:Josh Hamilton (baseball)/GA1. The edit link for this section can be used to add comments to the review.

It's not ready for GA yet. It passes most of the Good Article Criteria but I think the section on the night club incident needs to be cut down to one paragraph. You also need to weed out some of the peacock terms like "torrid" and "stellar," especially since none of the sources use those terms. Reviewer: ~DC Let's Vent 16:49, 9 September 2010 (UTC)
Symbol unsupport vote.svg Seeing that my concerns haven't been addressed after 8 days, I'm failing it. Feel free to nominate it again. 10:45, 17 September 2010 (UTC)

[edit] Nicknames

It seems to be rearing its head again. I also imagine it is only going to get worse in the next few days. I think nicknames have a place in any article - but if the lead is supposed to summarize the key points about Hamilton's life and career - there is no need to have four nicknames in the second sentence. Canada Hky (talk) 18:03, 5 October 2010 (UTC)

I can agree with this. I would like to see a section lower in the article adreessing the nicknames he accumulates.Red3biggs (talk) 18:12, 5 October 2010 (UTC)
Right now, I just have it near the end of the Rangers section, but I don't know if that is the best spot. I don't think its going to end up large enough (or verifiable enough) for a full section, but a sentence or two certainly works. Canada Hky (talk) 18:19, 5 October 2010 (UTC)

[edit] Contradiction (or not clear)?

Hi there - I'm completely ignorant as to making actual edits but I thought I would chime in on something in case someone agreed and thought an edit necessary. It seems awkward and perhaps even contradictory to to have the sentence "Hamilton says he hasn't used drugs or alcohol since October 6, 2005" followed only a couple paragraphs later by the "Nightclub Incident". Those two don't seem to reconcile with each other. 71.232.192.34 (talk) 18:38, 23 October 2010 (UTC)

If both are referenced, I'd leave them. The first one could be clarified with a date perhaps. Canada Hky (talk) 18:41, 23 October 2010 (UTC)
Agreed. That may make it a bit more elegant. Perhaps instead of "Hamilton says..." using something along the lines of "On xx.xx.xxxx(date) Hamilton said..." I think maybe it's the ongoing present tense of the word "says" that makes it feel a little wonky to me. Either way, not the worlds biggest deal - just seemed odd to me. 71.232.192.34 (talk) 18:51, 23 October 2010 (UTC)

[edit] Significant Typo Under Addictions and Recovery

Where he is quoted: "Hamilton says simply: "It's a good thing."" should be changed to: "It's a God thing.". That's what he says in the article that is cited. --DoctorvanNostrand (talk) 00:05, 18 October 2011 (UTC)

Thanks for pointing that out, I have fixed the quote. Canada Hky (talk) 23:39, 18 October 2011 (UTC)

[edit] Josh's parents

You have a inaccuracy. Josh Hamilton's parents were not killed in the automobile accident. They were seriously injured and had to leave him in Florida which led to his addiction. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 99.8.54.222 (talk) 13:57, 27 October 2011 (UTC)

[edit] comment about casting crowns

The article comments that Hamilton comes out to bat to the song "Until the whole world hears" by Casting Crowns. The footnote links to an article from 2009 which says he comes to bat to a song by Phillips Craig and Dean. I am not sure what he comes out to now, but in any case the footnote does not support the claim. When I saw them play July 2011, I thought he came out to a Third Day song, either "sing a song" or "this is my offering" — Preceding unsigned comment added by 75.88.15.77 (talk) 17:39, 9 February 2012 (UTC)

It might make sense to just delete that section. It's really not that important, and it doesn't seem to be true. Have a look at: http://rangersblog.dallasnews.com/archives/2011/04/rangers-walk-up-music-the-inco.html HomeworkHelper827 (talk) 00:08, 10 February 2012 (UTC)
