Some additional sources from books[edit]

Came across these while trying to establish notability for Karmaloop on the Requested Articles list; it is now a redirect to this page but thought I'd drop them here anyway if anyone wants to expand the article using published sources. Page was unprotected but improperly moved and retained camelcasing. Requesting G6 to return to non camel cased name, no longer necessary since it is not a URL, and is consistent with both the article and the website (aside from the artistic styling of the logo). Extra Citations added and checked, Bare URLS Removed[edit]

All points in the article have been cited with web pages or wiki pages and checked for accuracy. All bare URL citations have been changed to appear correct. (SjmKL (talk) 15:56, 19 August 2013 (UTC))[reply]

Spam[edit]

I noticed earlier today Jrdnwho added a referral-based spam link a couple times (1, 2, 3). I removed it, but it prompted me to look back at the history of this article because I remembered seeing something similar before. Lo and behold it's been rampant. So as to draw attention to the issue, I'm compiled a list of IPs, usernames, and referral numbers/codes. The spam link was first added by Sako94: (diff). Later: (diff1, diff2). Each time using referral number 1983589. IPs adding the same referral number in the same way: 96.229.86.199 (diff) and 71.95.175.229 (diff)

Today was Jrdnwho (see above), using promo code 8577421. Those below all came between Sako94 and Jrdnwho (arranged alphanumerically):

The most prolific has been SwaggieBreh, using referral number 1849699 and promo code WIKI via the following:

Not sure where you are reading "Top brands" but I went ahead and removed some of the promotional claims involving the word "exclusive." You don't think a list of the brands Karmaloop carries belongs on its personal page? Seems like that list should keep. Let's work towards removing this tag and improve the quality of the page. "Top brands" = "top streetwear brands." No, I don't think a list of brands is appropriate for an encyclopedia article (rather than a business profile or advertisement) unless its relationship with those brands receives significant coverage in reliable third party sources -- or if, as is the case here, the company distributes its own brands. I had some time to kill so went through it in the last hour or two, concluding with the removal of the advert tag. Issues addressed/changes made include:

  • "Verge Culture" was used many times throughout the article as though it were a neutral description rather than a marketing buzzword
  • tone issues and WP:PEACOCKING, e.g. "...Karmaloop's competitive advantage ... company's unique strategy...", "top streetwear brands and favorites from the site"
  • use of "Karmaloop Rep Program" / "evangelists" in place of "affiliate marketing"
  • Huge problem with WP:UNDUE coverage of unsourced or poorly sourced and thus non-notable lists and descriptions of the company's offerings, products, brands, promotions, etc. This consisted a large part of the article.
  • An extraordinary amount of unreliable sources. Primary sources and press releases, links to other Wikipedia pages, YouTube videos....
  • I compressed several of the sections into "Marketing profile." It seems like a lot of what Karmaloop is known for is its approach to marketing and promotion -- including a number of innovative approaches that have proven quite effective. I'm not certain "Marketing profile" is the best way to word it , but generally speaking the individual promotions are not notable enough to have their own sections.
  • The biggest removal of content was the section that was called "Sites." There were almost no reliable sources throughout its subsections. Undue/not notable. The other sites are mentioned in the article already; more sources are needed to merit separate sections.
  • The "Press" section was purely promotional. A list of publications that have mentioned the company with absolutely no context beyond that. Nonetheless, I'm copying it to the hatted section below if anyone wants to use the sources in the article itself (rather than as part of the article).

Karmaloop has been featured in publications and on sites such as Entrepreneur,[1] USA Today,[2] The Boston Globe[3] Business Week,[4] Boston Business Journal,[5][6] Boston Magazine,[7] MTV,[8][9] Complex,[10] Vibe,[11] Nylon Magazine,[12] INC.,[13] Hypebeast,[14] Reuters,[15] and more. Karmaloop was ranked number 359 on trade magazine Internet Retailer's "2008 Top 500 Guide".[2]

  • happy to talk about any of the specifics. It's no longer deserving of an advert tag (at least I can't imagine anyone would say so), but there are many areas it could be improved -- including areas that could be elaborated upon. If I have time later I'll go look for some reliable sources to try to fill some of the void left by the removal of so many unreliable ones (which is visually kind of a harsh difference, I recognize).
