I notice there is no reference for why the dam project was stopped. It caught my eye because I remember reading that the people of La Farge burned in effigy the politician responsible (or local politician partially responsible) for stopping the project, and carried the ashes to the cemetery in a manure spreader. (when the project was stopped.) That action would seem to indicate support for finishing the project, even if there was not support for starting it. I don't have time to track down the facts right now, I just know that it was an article in the Vernon County Broadcaster, probably between 1998 and 2006 or so (most likely toward the beginning of that time period). One Wheel (talk) 02:02, 31 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

As a long time resident of the area, I find the bias towards the construction of the dam to be unsettling. The dam project was stopped in large part because the economic payback of the dam no longer outweighed the cost and destruction of the habitat that the dam would cause, not merely because the Army Corps of Engineers and the "Madison environmentalists" had a little disagreement. While the area does suffer from major flooding, the farmers who had their land taken from them before the Army Corps had sufficiently researched the impacts of their own project would probably prefer to have their land with the flooding than having no land and a reminder of the governments own shortsightedness. Out of all of this though, came a good outcome. The Kickapoo Valley Reserve is a wonderful place and testament to the communities ability to make the best of rotten circumstances.
