MISC[edit]

The picture displayed here, apparently seen from the Wright Brothers Memorial is, in fact, in Kill Devil Hills. 2010-08-05 It has been for a long time. Kitty Hawk was a general name and the town was not incorporated as such until 1979 or 1980. Kill Devil Hills was incorporated as a township earlier, but I do not think that it was a township as such when the first flight occurred. I didn't think there was a specific name at the time, but other comments here, which I have no specific reason to doubt, seem to imply that there was a general regional name for Kill Devil Hills in 1903.

First Flight[edit]

The first powered flight actually happened in Kill Devil Hills, NC. The misconception that it was in Kitty Hawk arose from the Wright brothers telegram sent from the Kitty Hawk telegram office, the only one in the area. Also, the picture from the monument at the top of the page actually shows Kill Devil Hills. It should probably be replaced. This article should probably be removed from the wikiproject for aviation and be replaced by Kill Devil Hills

Leftover[edit]

- Kitty Hawk was made famous on December 17, 1903, when Orville Wright made the first powered airplane flight from a sand dune four miles away in Kill Devil Hills. That aircraft is now popularly called the Kitty Hawk; at the time it was called the Wright Flyer. + Kitty Hawk was made famous on December 17, 1903, when Orville Wright made the first powered airplane flight from a sand dune four miles away in Kill Devil Hills. The aircraft carrier USS Kitty Hawk (CV-63) is named and the aircraft transport ship USS Kitty Hawk (AKV-1) was named for this town.

First flight[edit]

Hi! Everywhere I read the first flight was in Kitty Hawk. But the hill, where it happened, is located in Kill Devil Hills. So why is not Kill Devil Hills the place of the first flight? Henning Blatt (talk) 22:17, 12 May 2008 (UTC)

What is the origin of the name "Kitty Hawk"[edit]

... where did it come from, what does it mean? Maikel (talk) 13:50, 13 May 2008 (UTC)

Pictures[edit]

Neither of them are Kitty Hawk, they're Kill Devil Hills. I'm in Kill Devil Hills as I type this. I'm reluctant to leave the page with no images at all, but the ones here are completely inappropriate. Should I go up the road and photograph some random thing in Kitty Hawk? Maybe the 'Welcome to Kitty Hawk' sign. Certainly not Kill Devil Hill itself nor the Wright Brothers Monument, because neither of them are in Kitty Hawk. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 65.40.104.193 (talk) 05:06, 23 February 2011 (UTC)

Sure, take some nice pix, and choose a good one for the article. Post Office with sign, maybe? Or the old Life-Saving Station, which I've read is now a restaurant. Stone marker where Wilbur built glider no. 1? Be creative! DonFB (talk) 05:43, 23 February 2011 (UTC)

Aftermath of Hurricane Irene[edit]

The destruction of Kitty Hawk should be mentioned. Fox News reported heavy damage. --63.3.2.130 (talk) 21:53, 28 August 2011 (UTC)
